Finding a parking spot can be a headache and forking out a hefty sum for it doesn't make it better.

On top of car insurance and fuel, motorists are already struggling with costs.

If you want to avoid splurging more on parking, it is best to check which spots could break your bank.

Churchill Motor Insurance has shared the top 10 most expensive councils in Britain to use a public car park after looking into figures.

According to the firm, most local authorities have bumped up parking charges by at least 11% since 2022.

Councils could be hiking up the prices in a desperate bid to encourage motorists to switch to public transport, the study noted.

Nicholas Mantel, Head of Churchill Motor Insurance, told Express: "We know that increased parking charges aren't all about raising money for councils.

"Often, they are also put in place as a traffic management measure, encouraging people to use alternative transport options.

"With that in mind, no matter their location, drivers should check parking charges in advance of any journey and look to see where they might be able to find a cheaper rate."

The study reported that Bracknell Forest Council could really hit you in your wallet with an average £6.65 rate per hour - double the price of others.

Edinburgh: Among the World's Most Expensive Cities for Parking

If you were to park here for work, this sum would add up to be a whopping £53.20 per shift,

A visit to the Royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea would cost you a parking charge of £4.90 per hour.

If you had your heart set on an English getaway, then brace for £3.75 charges in seaside towns like Blackpool and Brighton.

Although local authorities in the southern part of the UK seemed to be charging the most, Scottish motorists also had charges foisted on them.

Most populated parts of Scotland like Glasgow and East Lothian have made it to the top-10, imposing at least £3 fees for parking.

It comes as the UK seaside towns with the most expensive parking charges have been revealed - with a major holiday destination in the top spot.

Drivers could be missing out on savings of more than £20 a day by passing over some less-appreciated beaches in favour of staycation hotspots.
