What Do We Think About Troye Sivan’s “Rush”?

After a twink torture stint on The Idol, Troye Sivan is back to making music and firmly in his horny era. On Thursday, the Aussie singer released the delightfully hedonistic music video for “Rush,” the ‘70s disco-inspired lead single off his forthcoming studio album Something to Give Each Other.

“Rush” was at least partially inspired by the iconic brand of poppers, and the accompanying music video lives up to its title. Over the course of the nearly four-minute video, a sweat-drenched Sivan grinds through a haze of queer parties, enjoying some steamy hook-ups along the way. There’s no shortage of voguing, glitter, and jockstraps, all images that instantly evoke queer summer joy.

In a statement, Sivan likened “Rush” to “the feeling of kissing a sweaty stranger on a dancefloor, a 2 hour date that turned into a weekend, a crush, a winter, a summer.”

The single feels like a natural continuation of the unabashed celebration of sexuality that Sivan has been working toward since his 2018 album Bloom — which, lest anyone forget, features a verified bottoming anthem as its title track. It’s no wonder that The Cut writers Choire Sicha and Jason P. Frank have dubbed him “the king twink.”

Although it’s brand new, “Rush” feels poised to join Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam” and Janelle Monaé’s “Lipstick Lover” in the pantheon of 2023 song of the summer contenders. From the looks of it, gay Twitter largely agrees.

As one viewer put it: “Troye Sivan evolving from Tumblr sad boy gay to just an absolute unashamed f-word in his music is something so personal to me.”

Some also critiqued the lack of body diversity in Sivan’s “Rush” fantasy. As Rolling Stone staff writer Tomás Mier opined, “[The video] seems like a case study on how white gays choose to view queer people as a whole. There’s not a single fat person in the entire video. Just white twinks and chiseled bodies.”

Something to Give Each Other drops October 13, marking Sivan’s first full-length album in five years and his third overall. Along with the “Rush” video, he also shared the official cover art, in which he laughs as his head is encircled by an anonymous guy’s thighs.

“This album is my something to give to you,” Sivan wrote to his 14.6 million followers on Instagram. “A kiss on the dancefloor, a date turned into a weekend, a crush, a winter, a summer. Party after party, after party after after party. Heartbreak, freedom. Community, sisterhood, friendship. All that. <3”
