While it might still be taking time for the Oscars to fully honor out queer performers with the Academy’s most prestigious awards, that doesn’t mean that LGBTQ+ celebs aren’t making huge statements at the ceremony. The red carpet is always a moment for celebs to sashay out in their most opulent looks, and the 2024 Oscars were no different. Many LGBTQ+ celebrities showed out in style, including Colman Domingo, who is one of only two out actors to be nominated for playing an out queer man, as well as the first Afro-Latino actor nominated in his category.
A cavalcade of Domingo’s fellow LGBTQ+ nominees stunned at this year’s red carpet, including Barbie singer Billie Eilish, nominated for her song “What Was I Made For?” as well as Maestro actor Matt Bomer. While Eilish’s Chanel outfit was effortlessly chic, her bold message also turned heads: Along with several celebrities who attended the ceremony, Eilish wore a red pin on the lapel of her jacket, symbolizing her support for a ceasefire in Palestine.
Oscar fashion can sometimes be a bit stodgy, but this year, queer and trans celebs brought the glam and upped the ante. Below are our favorite LGBTQ+ looks from the 2024 Oscars.
Cynthia Erivo
Cynthia Erivo, formerly nominated for her work in Harriet and a presenter at the 2024 Oscars, must have wanted to remind anyone who sees her of her upcoming role as Elphaba in Wicked. She showed up to the Oscars in a dramatic, forest green gown.
Laverne Cox
By now an Oscar staple, Laverne Cox, who hosts E!’s annual red carpet programming, looked absolutely gorgeous in a vintage Mugler gown that included a gold bodice and bold black scarf.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish, an odds-on favorite to win for her Barbie anthem “What Was I Made For?,” always wows with eccentric fashion choices. This outing is no different, rocking a houndstooth skirt, a black velvet jacket, and a Chanel purse.
Eugene Lee Yang
Known for his work on social media as part of the Try Guys, actor Eugene Lee Yang showed up to the 2024 Oscars in a dramatic red suit jacket and skirt combo that cascaded and blended into the event’s red carpet.
Colman Domingo
Men’s fashion can be a bit staid, but Colman Domingo has been having a lot of fun trying daring looks this season. While he’s gone for bold colors at other awards shows this year, he opted for a classic black double-breasted tux here with silver accents and a daring bow tie.
Lily Gladstone
The Killers of the Flower Moon star, who is the first Native American person to be nominated for an acting Oscar, donned a floor-length black gown with a deep blue train. Gladstone, who uses she/they pronouns, has spoken out during awards season about “decolonizing gender.”
Matt Bomer
Matt Bomer, who this year dazzled audiences in both the television series Fellow Travelers as well as the Oscar-nominated biopic Maestro went for simple and traditional, looking dashing in a black-and-white tuxedo with a matching bow tie.
Jodie Foster
The two-time Oscar winner, nominated for her role in Nyad, rocked an understated chic navy dress with a high neckline.
