No one has more fun dressing up than a queer person, and that joy is on full display every year at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Met Gala. This year’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” is, of course, an homage to the late designer, who revolutionized fashion at Parisian houses like Chanel and Chloé. And while many of tonight’s guests weren’t wearing Chanel, Chloé, or his namesake brand, the queer talent present for the lavish festivities stepped up to the plate, turning out looks that were just as captivating as they were theme-appropriate.
As is her wont, Glass Onion star Janelle Monáe treated us to an entire performance, slowly removing layers from her sculptural Thom Browne look as she stripped down from a glorious coat into a sheer hoop gown. Recent Grammy winner Kim Petras, meanwhile, camped it up in black and white Marc Jacobs, complete with a towering pair of matching thigh-high boots. After finally being released from a harrowing stint in Russian prison, WNBA star Brittney Griner was all smiles as she strolled the carpet alongside her wife, Cherelle — both rocking custom Calvin Klein. Kristen Stewart gave off gender-bending realness in Chanel.
And then, there was the two-time Tony-nominated Jeremy Pope, who maybe fit the theme best in a massive Balmain cape emblazoned with Karl Lagerfeld’s face. Watching Pope as he mustered up every ounce of strength to drag the piece across the carpet — at least five men were on hand to assist him with the task — was a delightful reminder of the commitment dressing up for tonight sometimes entails.
