Beloved country music star Marren Morris has opened up about her queerness for the first time.

On Sunday, June 9, the Grammy-winning musician took to Instagram to share photos from a recent Phoenix, Arizona stop on her RSVP Redux Tour, including one of her waving a Pride Progress flag. But this wasn’t just any concert post; it was also a lowkey bisexual coming-out moment.

“Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+,” Morris captioned her post. “Happy pride 🌈.”

Her casual announcement follows a new norm in which celebrities are coming out more casually, as many now find publicly identifying as queer to be less of a perceived personal and professional risk than it was in the past. Whether it’s Morris mentioning her bisexuality in a tour post or Lil Nas X coming out as gay with a tweet, serious sit-down interviews and press tours are no longer a staple of A-list celebrity coming-out moments.

Although this is the first time that Morris has publicly identified as bi, her support of the LGBTQ+ community as a whole is nothing new. Over the years, Morris has been outspoken about queer and trans rights, even as she’s faced pushback from her more conservative country music peers.

Back in 2022, Fox News pundit Tucker Carlson famously referred to the singer as a “lunatic country music person” after she condemned influencer Brittany Aldean — who is also married to country star Jason Aldean — for a transphobic Instagram caption. In response, Morris released official T-shirts with the Carlson slogan on them, along with the phone number for Trans Lifeline’s Hotline, a peer support phone service run by trans people for trans people. To date, according to Morris, over $150,000 worth of proceeds from the shirt have gone to Trans Lifeline and GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program.

Later, Morris opened up pushing for inclusivity within the country music scene during a January 2023 appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked.

“Coming from country music and its relationship with LGBTQ+ members, I just want to say I’m sorry,” Morris told contestants at the time. “And I love you guys for making me feel like a brave voice in country music. So, I just thank you guys so much for inspiring me.”
