The 2024 Golden Globes are on the horizon, and this year’s nominees are full of queer films and TV shows alike.

The nominations for the 81st Golden Globe Awards were announced Monday morning, officially signaling that awards season is now in full swing — and that we’re due for a repeat of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon come next year. Barbie received nine Globe nominations, while Christopher Nolan’s historical drama notched eight.

But Oppenheimer isn’t the only biographical feature poised to take home trophies. This awards season features no shortage of LGBTQ+ biopics, several of which received Globe nominations. Bradley Cooper’s new film Maestro, which centers on iconic queer composer Leonard Bernstein, picked up four nods, including Best Motion Picture (Drama), and nominations for stars Cooper and Carey Mulligan, who plays Bernstein’s wife, Felicia. Meanwhile, Annette Bening and Jodie Foster received acting nods for portraying swimmer Diana Nyad and her queer coach Bonnie Stoll in Nyad. Gay actor Colman Domingo received a Best Actor nomination for playing civil rights leader Bayard Rustin in the Netflix historical drama Rustin.

If Barbie was also your unofficial gay movie of the summer, you’ll be happy to know that Greta Gerwig’s pink blockbuster was nominated in several major categories, including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Original Song, in which queer singer Billie Eilish’s song “What Was I Made For?” was recognized alongside “I’m Just Ken” and Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night.” Celebrated gay director Todd Haynes’ twisty melodrama May December also scored numerous Musical or Comedy nominations, including a Best Motion Picture nomination and acting recognition for leads Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton. Gay actor Andrew Scott received a Best Actor drama nomination for his role in the acclaimed queer fantasy-romance film All of Us Strangers. The Color Purple, an adaptation of the Broadway musical based on Alice Walker’s seminal queer novel of the same name, also scored nods for lead actress Fantasia Barrino and supporting actress Danielle Brooks.

On the TV side of things, HBO’s queer post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us picked up three major nominations. The show is up for Best Television Series (Drama) against heavy hitters like The Crown and Them’s favorite not-gay show beloved by gays, Succession. Nonbinary actor Bella Ramsey received a Best Actress nomination for playing spunky lesbian teen Ellie Williams. (The Globes, like many major awards shows, continues to require performers to be considered in binary performance categories.) The Paramount+ gay historical drama Fellow Travelers received nominations for Best Limited Series, as well as a lead acting nod for star Matt Bomer.
