A passion and commitment to the 4C development are at the heart of the Sirikoi philosophy. They don’t just talk about it – they live it. The lodge is carefully designed to utilise renewable energy sources with 100% use of solar energy, minimise waste, and use eco-friendly materials to create an environment that is in harmony with nature.

Most of their food is grown in their organic garden, and what they cannot grow, they purchase as much as possible from local sources and offer fair and above-average prices. Their low-density tourism means the lodge has a maximum of 18 beds, reducing the environmental impact. They provide water and meals to the Lewa School and work closely with their guests and local organisations to promote the most sustainable practices in Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce.

CONSERVATION

Sirikoi is proud to play a vital role in conserving the flora and fauna of the region. Our team manages and maintains a vast 3,000-acre area alongside Lewa Wildlife Conservancy’s 48,000-acre space, actively working to ensure the safety and protection of endangered species and the area’s biodiversity.

To this end, they have established exclusion zones, planted numerous trees, and created forests that were once destroyed. Sirikoi Lodge ensures the collection of Conservation Fees from all our guests and paid to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy promptly and encourages their guests to support Lewa Wildlife Conservancy through donations. Their lodge adheres to the Lewa Code of Conduct to protect the flora and fauna in the area. For instance, they limit the number of cars per animal sighting to 2 and avoid off-road driving to minimise their environmental impact.

They actively participate in conservation efforts, including contributing to the fence surrounding Sirikoi and supplying power to the electric fencing using solar panels. This creates an elephant exclusion zone to protect the woodland and provides vital habitat for the endangered black Rhino, which relies on acacia leaves as a significant part of its diet.

In addition to their conservation efforts, they believe in educating their staff and guests about the environment and conservation. For example, they provide information about invasive species of plants and encourage our staff to remove them when spotted. Ultimately, they are committed to promoting sustainable tourism and protecting the environment for future generations.

COMMUNITY

Sirikoi is dedicated to building solid relationships with the local communities in their area. This is why they actively participate in education programs related to conservation, finances, computer skills, and organic farming, which are well-attended and popular. They also support various programs such as bursaries, health initiatives, Life Skills programs, school feeding programs, and income generation initiatives.

Furthermore, they are committed to creating employment opportunities for community members and supporting local schools and orphanages. For example, they supply water to Lewa School, showcase tribal dancing from local communities as an income-generating activity, and work to help disadvantaged children from a nearby school/orphanage. Additionally, all earnings from beauty treatments support orphaned and street children in a local school.

Most of the aid they provide comes from their funds, and they plan to establish a foundation to promote these projects further and help them expand. They aim to foster positive relationships with the local communities and sustainably contribute to their well-being.

They also work closely with staff, creating a healthy environment and community. They invest in their well-being, education, and health. They created a Sacco in 2012 to help with financial burdens and do many training sessions on assisting them with their finances, life skills, etc.

CULTURE

At Sirikoi Lodge, they strive to promote the preservation of different cultures by encouraging their staff to stay true to their cultural heritage. They also advise their guests on cultural sensitivity and awareness and organise trips to local villages for a unique opportunity to learn first-hand about the ancient customs, culture, and daily lives of the Laikipia and Maasai tribes.

Although the area was originally dominated by the Maasai tribe, it has since welcomed other cultures, making it more complex. To address this, they have initiated Origin storytelling to involve all tribes in their community and love sharing stories of their history and culture with their guests. They support all kinds of traditions, from beadwork to ceremonies, and believe that cultural diversity should be celebrated and preserved.

COMMERCE

Sirikoi is committed to ethical and sustainable practices, so they try to purchase as much as possible from local sources such as farmers, shops, and curio sellers. They believe in offering fair and above-average prices to local traders, which helps support their livelihoods and contributes to the local economy. They also encourage their guests to participate in activities such as cultural village visits and traditional dances from the local community, which provides a direct source of income for them. Moreover, they proudly employ approximately 75% of our workforce from the local community.

They contribute to responsible tourism and sustainable development by prioritising local sourcing and employment. These practices have a range of positive impacts, from reducing unemployment and poverty to improving social cohesion and community well-being. At Sirikoi, they believe that supporting the local community is the right thing to do and makes for a more authentic and enriching travel experience for our guests.
