Happy Thursday, and happy Fourth of July! In between barbecues and fireworks, enjoy reading this festive edition of DP Daybreak.

Current Drexel University President and former Penn Executive Vice President John Fry has been appointed as the next president of Temple University, and The Daily Pennsylvanian spoke with several Democratic politicians who reaffirmed their support for President Joe Biden after last week's debate. 

But first, the Penn & Slavery Project has been awarded funding that will allow it to expand its outreach and research opportunities during the upcoming school year.

Penn & Slavery Project looks toward future outreach

The Penn & Slavery Project, a student-driven project that researches the University’s historical ties to slavery and the slave trade, held its annual research presentations in May and is planning for an eventful 2024-25 school year.

The group, which was founded in 2017 by student researchers who discovered Penn's ties to the slave trade, has fought to gain recognition in the Penn community since its creation. Earlier this year, members and affiliates of the group spoke with the DP about the project's findings and their strategies to gain visibility.

Now, after being granted new funding from Provost John Jackson Jr.'s office, the group is looking ahead to the upcoming academic year with aims to further expand publicity efforts and community outreach.

  The Stuart Weitzman School of Design has announced seven new faculty members and two new department chairs for the 2024-25 academic year.

  Isabella Whittaker, a 2024 Penn graduate, earned her spot on Team USA by placing sixth in the women's 400-meter relay final at the United States Olympic Trials.

  As players graduate and transfer, Penn men's basketball has introduced its incoming class of freshman recruits.

In 2020, the DP reported that then-recent graduate Nia Akins was training professionally during the COVID-19 pandemic with the goal of qualifying for the Olympics. In June, Akins and 2024 Penn graduate Isabella Whittaker were awarded spots on Team USA's Paris Olympics track and field roster.
