Good morning, Penn.
Happy Thursday!

But first, The Daily Pennsylvanian spoke to residents and city officials to examine the circumstances surrounding the eight-day shutdown of the Mason on Chestnut.
The Mason on Chestnut, an off-campus residence near Penn’s campus, has faced management changes, failed inspections, and resident dissatisfaction since 2020, when development company CSC acquired and renovated what was formerly International House Philadelphia. An eight-day shutdown due to a Cease Operations Order is the latest incident in the building’s tainted history.
The building received the order from the City of Philadelphia after a flood rendered the building uninhabitable. Mason residents expressed frustration with management’s lack of communication and assistance in the wake of the order from the City and voiced concern about the development company that owns the building.
The DP spoke with representatives from the City of Philadelphia to discuss the circumstances surrounding the shutdown, examined the Mason’s history of failed inspections, and compiled residents’ reactions to the shutdown and their feelings toward management moving forward.
A lawsuit filed by a group of Penn faculty alleging “McCarthyism” has been dismissed by a court due to a lack of standing. The judge also denied the plaintiffs’ motion for a preliminary injunction.
Penn Libraries staff members have expressed their intent to unionize to the director of Penn Libraries and have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board.
