The Daily Pennsylvanian’s leadership will speak as part of the School of Arts and Sciences’ “Living the Hard Promise” dialogue series on April 29.

The event – titled “Student Journalism During Unprecedented Times” – will include DP president Molly Cohen, Executive Editor Anna Vazhaeparambil, and Editor-in-Chief Jared Mitovich. Dick Polman, a Maury Povich Writer-in-Residence and full-time member of the faculty of the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing, will moderate the panel.

The event will take place in ARCH 208 at 5 p.m. on April 29 with refreshments afterwards. Participants can also join via livestream

The DP leadership will speak about their experiences as student journalists during fall 2023, while emphasizing the challenges of balancing course load and their roles at the newspaper.

The panelists – who served as News Editors and Photo Editor during last semester’s coverage of rising campus tensions and Penn’s leadership crisis – will grapple with the publication’s relationship with the University amid questions of free speech on campus.

The SAS Dean’s office announced the “Living the Hard Promise” initiative in early November to engage the campus community in respectful conversation amid campus tensions. The series includes small group discussions, faculty symposiums, and reflections to explore complex current events.

“These conversations won’t solve the world’s problems, but they are a start,” the SAS Dean’s Office wrote in the email announcing the initiative. “We trust that this series will reinvigorate our engagement in the essential work of a university: establishing dialogue, opening us to ideas, learning from each other, and respecting one another’s dignity and humanity.”
