James Williams Tyrrell, explorer, mine promoter (b at Weston, Canada W 10 May 1863; d at Bartonville, Ont 16 Jan 1945), brother of Joseph Burr TYRRELL. James was educated in civil engineering.

James Williams Tyrrell, explorer, mine promoter (b at Weston, Canada W 10 May 1863; d at Bartonville, Ont 16 Jan 1945), brother of Joseph Burr Tyrrell. James was educated in civil engineering. He practised in Hamilton until 1893 when he embarked with his brother on a canoe trip across the interior of the Keewatin Dist from Lk Athabasca to Hudson Bay via the Dubawnt River. His book describing the expedition, Across the Sub-Arctics of Canada (1897), is a classic of northern travel writing. In 1900 Tyrrell led a Dominion Lands Survey expedition through the Keewatin. He was later among the pioneer mine promoters in the Red Lk area of northern Ontario and became president of Tyrrell Red Lake Mines.
