Dwayne Lyle Congdon, mountaineer and guide (b at Lethbridge, Alta 7 Aug 1956). From a love fostered by his parents on camping trips in the Rockies, Congdon decided in his early 20s to become an Alpine guide. In 1981 he participated in 2 Himalayan climbs and earned a name for being a strong, effective high-altitude mountaineer, a reputation enhanced by his 1982 role in the Canadian Mount Everest Expedition. His experience on that climb, and a subsequent attempt on another Himalayan giant, 8490 m Makalu, stood him in good stead for his success in the 1986 Canadian Everest Light Expedition. On May 20, Congdon and partner Sharon Wood became the third and fourth Canadians to reach the 8848 m summit of the world's highest mountain.
