LSU third baseman Tommy White (47) launches a grand slam against Ole Miss in the fourth inning on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Alex Box Stadium.

Tennesee's 4-1 win Sunday over Texas A&M in Game 2 of the College World Series finals gives the Volunteers a swing at what was once thought to be an unbreakable record:

The single-season mark of 188 home runs the LSU Tigers hit en route to winning the 1997 CWS.

The Vols slugged two more homers Sunday against the Aggies to give them 182 for the season, the second-most in NCAA Division I baseball history. Game 3 is Monday at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

One LSU record definitely seems safe, however. In 1997, the Tigers hit 2.69 home runs per game in 70 games, with at least one round-tripper in each contest. Tennessee has hit 2.56 homers in 71 games and went without a home run in seven of those games.
