The National Weather Service has issued a second heat advisory for the Baton Rouge area.

The heat advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday. The announcement comes following Monday's heat advisory.

On Monday, Baton Rouge tied a record-breaking heat of 100 degrees set in 2009, according to the NWS.

Residents in southeast Louisiana can expect heat index values up to 111 degrees on Tuesday. The NWS classifies a heat index between 103 degrees and 124 degrees as danger, with "heat cramps or heat exhaustion likely, and heat stroke possible with prolonged exposure and/or physical activity."

Similar to Monday, East Baton Rouge Parish and all surrounding parishes are included in the advisory. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses in the affected areas.

The NWS encourages residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid being in the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. When outside, residents should wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.

When working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned areas.

"Heat stroke is an emergency!" the NWS said. Residents experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke should take action, move out of the sun and call 911.
