update on nhc

The second named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season will likely form this weekend as the system moves over the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

The system, about 1,500 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands at 7 a.m. Friday, is slowly "becoming better defined," NHC forecasters said Friday morning. The tropical disturbance is producing organized showers, compared to Thursday morning when it was rather disorganized hundreds of miles away from the Cabo Verde Islands.

The tropical depression has a 100% chance of development on Friday or Saturday as it moves westward and approaches the Lesser Antilles. It will likely become a tropical depression Friday evening and will later strengthen into Tropical Storm Beryl, forecasters said in the 1 p.m. tropics update.

On Friday morning, NHC forecasters spotted another tropical wave producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles away from the Cabo Verde Islands. Some slow development is possible next week as it moves across the central and tropic Atlantic.

The chance of the system developing within the next two days is near zero. The chance of development within the next week is also low, around 20%.

A tropical disturbance located over the western Caribbean Sea that forecasters have been tracking since Monday morning continues to produce widespread showers and thunderstorms.

Development is not expected on Friday as it moves west-northwestward. However, NHC forecasters say that system could strengthen late Saturday or early Sunday as it emerges over the Bay of Campeche.

The formation chance is only 30% within the next two days and week, but regardless, portions of Central America and Mexico should expect heavy rainfall during the weekend.

None of the three tropical disturbances pose a threat to Louisiana right now.
