Divers recovered the body of boy from a pond early Tuesday in the Keystone of Galvez neighborhood in Ascension Parish, sheriff's deputies said.

The 12-year-old Galvez Middle student had been reported missing Monday evening after being seen going into one of the stormwater detention ponds in the large community south of La. 42 in the Galvez area east of Prairieville, deputies said.

The youth's death is currently being treated as a suspected drowning, deputies said Tuesday.

In a statement Monday night while the boy was still missing but believed to have drowned, Sheriff Bobby Webre promised emergency responders would work until the youth was found.

"We are committed to utilizing every available resource to ensure his family has closure," he said. "I assure the family and our residents that we will not rest until the child is found."

Donovan Jackson, sheriff's spokesman, said emergency responders from a variety of agencies worked from 6 p.m. Monday to about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, when divers found the boy.

His body was found in a pond just east of the intersection of Marblestone Avenue and Timberstone Drive and just south of Henderson Bayou.

The neighborhood has several ponds for drainage and water quality purposes and is also cut in half by the bayou.

Dive teams with the Gonzales Fire Department and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office searched for the body along with state wildlife agents and local firefighters.
