Jonathon Johnson Jr., 16, was shot and killed in New Roads, officials say.

The teen, Jonathon Johnson Jr., was New Roads Mayor Theron Smith's grandson by marriage, Smith confirmed Tuesday.

"He was a good kid," Smith said.

Smith said that Johnson, who was known to family and friends as Jay, enjoyed football and played on the freshman football team at Zachary High. He had aspirations to play on the varsity team, Smith said.

Johnson was also helpful to his siblings; Smith said when Johnson's sister was told to clean her room, Johnson would help her so she wouldn't get in trouble.

"He was respectful and kindhearted," Smith said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting as of Tuesday afternoon, Clayton said, but law enforcement is working on leads.

Additional information was not immediately available.
