A St. Gabriel man admitted to firing into a crowd inside the Dutchtown Popeyes last fall, damaging the restaurant, and has been sentenced to two years in state prison, court papers say.

Jayden Junius, 21, is one of at least two suspects in the shootout at the fried chicken chain store on Oct. 14, court papers show.

Ascension Parish sheriff's deputies said at the time that one person was injured in the shootings, which happened shortly before 4:50 p.m. at the restaurant off La. 73 southwest of Interstate 10.

A store employee told an arriving deputy that two males came into the restaurant and became involved in a gunfight with another store employee, according to a sheriff's report.

The deputy quickly tracked down and arrested that employee, Kevontae Miley, walking through a parking lot toward La. 73, the report says. The deputy reportedly found a pistol in Miley's waistband under his shirt and restaurant apron.

Miley, who is also from St. Gabriel, faces counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use and possession of a gun, and illegal possession of a gun by a juvenile, court papers say.

Miley, who was 17 at the time of the shootings but is being prosecuted as an adult, later told detectives that he acted in self-defense after he had received a warning call from his brother, the sheriff's report says.

The brother reportedly told Miley that "several subjects" were "livestreaming a video of his work," the report says.

Miley, who is expected back in court June 25, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Judge Cody Martin, of the 23rd Judicial District Court, handed down Junius' sentence on May 29 under a plea agreement that he reached with prosecutors.

Junius pleaded guilty to illegal use of a weapon, and prosecutors dropped additional counts of criminal damage to property and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, court minutes say.

Attempts to reach prosecutors and defense attorneys for Junius and Miley were unsuccessful.
