Candidate announcements welcome

The Plainsman is publishing candidate-prepared announcements for the Nov. 5 elections.

Announcements must include the candidate's age, political party and education. All announcements must be less than 400 words and received by July 19. A color photo of the candidate also should be sent as a high resolution jpg attachment.

The statements will be run on a space available basis.

Park closed though July 5

The HugYourPeople Park on Lee Street will be closed to Friday, July 5, for essential maintenance, including tree trimming of the mature oak trees and cleaning and sanitizing the playground equipment.

Library closed for Fourth

All locations of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library will be closed Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, in observance of Independence Day.

School supply help sought

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Zachary will be holding its Back to School Giveaway at the Zachary High School Gymnasium on Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. until supplies run out.

The Committee is in need of donations for the event, which will feature school supplies, sno-balls, the bookmobile and refreshments. Attendees are asked to donate a canned good.

A Back 2 School Block Party will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 27 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 22911 Reames Road, Zachary. Free school supplies will be given out while they last.

Balloon festival offers time for fundraising

Zachary Really Hot Air Balloon Festival has time slots in its festival schedule for a nonprofit organization or a school group looking to raise money. Email downtownlivezachary@gmail.com. The time slot is 2 p.m.-6 p.m., and can be broken into two slots. Suggestions include a cornhole tournament, fishing tournament on the pond, remote control boat races, etc. 

Football camp set

The Boston Scott Football Camp for ages 8-12 is July 20 at Zachary High. Get information and register at bostonscott2024.eventbrite.com. The event is free.

Community health needs assessment

East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-Sharon Weston Broome and HealthyBR invite all East Baton Rouge residents to participate in the 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment survey at www.surveymonkey.com/r/LS3D2SX. Conducted every three years, this assessment allows local hospitals to identify and prioritize the most pressing health needs in our community.

The survey asks residents to rank health issues from most important (No. 1) to least important (No. 10). It will take a few minutes to complete and needs to be done by mid July.

At the end of the survey, participants have the option to provide their email address to receive a report of the survey findings.

Mammograms available in Zachary

Woman’s Hospital's mammography coach offering 3D mammograms will be at Zachary United Methodist Church, 4205 Church St., Wednesday, July 10. Call (225) 924-8268 to schedule. Physician’s orders are required and appointments are strongly encouraged. 

Clinton Bicentennial

The Clinton Is Home committee has several things in the works for the town's 200th birthday, which will be celebrated Oct. 5.

Designs and applications are being accepted for official artwork that will represent the historic celebration. The contest is open to all current and former residents of East Feliciana Parish. Design a representation of Clinton and its history. Entries, including the original design and application, may be submitted by one of the following:

The winner will receive a complimentary T-shirt, poster and a gift. All entries must be accompanied by an application and submitted by July 15.

A Bake Sale is being planned for Aug. 3. The design contest winner will be announced at the Bake Sale.
