BLFGT at Spoke and Hub

The perfect sandwich when grabbing an early lunch on the weekends is a BLT. Bacon is the breakfast nod, and the veggies and toasty bread bring in the lunch element.

Spoke and Hub changes the game with its BLFGT — adding crispy fried green tomato slices and slathering the bread with a creamy brown butter aioli. It’s a big bite filled with tartness from the tomatoes and the bacon’s smoky crunch. Adding the hand-battered onion rings as a side makes a more-than-filling meal that puts you on the right path to tackle the rest of the day.

Chris's recently opened a cafe and market in the space where Maxwell's Market was located off Highland Road. The butcher shop has been in Baton Rouge for 30 years, but this is the first restaurant venture.

We decided to check it out.

Lunch options include chicken Caesar salad wraps, Reuben sandwiches, po-boys and other weekly specials like rice and gravy. I opted for the catfish po-boy — something I haven't had in a very long time.

When the po-boy arrived, it was huge. The bread was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, and the catfish was so fresh that it tasted like someone brought it in off the boat that morning. The fries were my favorite kind of fries: crispy, crunchy and topped with Cajun seasoning.

If you aren't tempted, there's enough to have leftovers for the next day.
