Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Pioneers’ 1984 boys’ basketball team celebrates 40-year reunion

Simi Valley is a basketball town. Hang it from the rafters, put it on the scoreboard and cut down the nets—the Rat Pack insists on it. Bob Hawking started building a future empire’s foundation when he arrived at Simi Valley High in 1974. His 1984 boys’ basketball team cemented the sport’s legacy at the school. BASEBALL /// Acorn All-Stars, Part I
Meet the first Acorn All-Star Baseball Team

Rowdy Roddy Piper declared in “John Carpenter’s They Live” movie: “I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. . . . And I’m all out of bubble gum.” Buckle up, boys and girls. The Snot Otter doesn’t serve bubble gum on the bumpy bullpen cart jaunt to Acorn Sports Island, but we do have one thing that […]

NOTEBOOK /// A spin through Acorn country with the Snot Otter

When Emperor Skroob decrees LeBron “King of Jabronis” James to comb the desert, the charlatan complies by scrubbing the Mojave with a limited edition Spaceballs the Movie Hair Pick. When the Snot Otter goes to work, he uses Yogurt’s flamethrower. For all the sports news that’s fit to print, this is a one-stop shop. It’s like a bodega, without feral […]

Return of the W

Westlake boys’ golfers win first CIF crown since 2016

Since 2016, the Tribe has wandered in the wilderness foraging for birdies, from green to shining green. The Warriors wander no more. They are back in the clubhouse, stoking up stogies (metaphorical stogies—the Grateful Dead concert with Bill Walton levitating on Saturn’s rings can be found on page 532,387 and beyond), basking in the sweetest elixir of victory. Westlake High’s […]

BASEBALL /// Controversy on the diamond

Moorpark High’s baseball team celebrated a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 championship win. Taylor Busch launched a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning that cleared the fence in left field. Greg Lareva, a senior captain and outfielder, crossed home plate first. When Busch touched home, the Green Machine celebrated with a dogpile at Diamond Stadium in Lake […]

SOFTBALL /// Shrieking Banshees 14, Agoura 6

The Overachievers of Agoura fell from a blue heaven to the corkscrewing dust devils on the infield back on Earth. Agoura High’s softball team, which made a deeper postseason run than anyone in Acorn country, ran out of juice in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 playoff semifinals, falling 14-6 to the Shrieking Banshees of ML King on May 11 at […]
