Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

L.A. County Supervisors send major government reform to the voters

Board expansion and elected CEO head to ballot

Sound ideas work well, until they don’t. The government structure for Los Angeles County, a metropolis bigger than most states, has been in place since 1912 at a time when the county’s population was only half-a-million people and women were denied the right to vote. But today the county’s government charter is frayed around the edges and needs to be […]

Dog zip-tied and abandoned. Really?

The reward has been upped to $7,600 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for a German shepherd dog that was found abandoned in Malibu Canyon last week, his mouth and neck constricted by plastic zip-ties. The nonprofit groups In Defense of Animals and Peace 4 Animals are giving a $5,100 award, and Hollywood Producer Marc Gurvitz of […]

Inclusive park coming soon

Kids of all abilities to have own playground at Agoura’s Morrison Park

The inclusive Morrison Park Playground project has nearly reached its fundraising goal following a jumbo donation received from the Southeast Ventura County YMCA. Representatives of the regional Y, which includes the Westlake Village branch, presented an oversized check in the amount of $100,000 to the Westlake Village Rotary Foundation at an Agoura Hills City Council meeting on June 26. The […]

Heat prompts early fire season

This year’s fire season began hot and heavy in the Conejo Valley. The Ventura County Fire Department battled two blazes in Thousand Oaks over the Fourth of July weekend. The first fire, dubbed the Rancho fire by VCFD, started and ended July 5—just five days after the official start of the 2024 fire season. The Rancho fire, confined to the […]

Calabasas punts on sales tax hike

City Council nixes the increase for now

Judging that support among residents for a proposed sales tax hike is uncertain— and with only a few months left to promote the increase before November’s election—the Calabasas City Council decided to table the additional tax at its meeting on June 26. Instead, the council voted unanimously to ask city staff for a report looking at all revenue-raising measures, including […]

Malibu state park in full bloom

Moorpark College amphitheater receives star-studded support

Pat Benatar on board with 4,000-seat venue

The next generation of young actors and musicians will never be able to reach their greatest potential if they don’t have a grand stage on which to perform, said organizers of a June 29 kickoff fundraiser for the 4,000-seat outdoor amphitheater being proposed on the campus of Moorpark College. Between the Hollywood Bowl and the Santa Barbara Bowl, the amphitheater […]

Time runs out for crew that stole pricey watch

Five teens from Los Angeles were arrested last week after reportedly robbing two customers at The Oaks mall and then leading deputies on a vehicle pursuit through Thousand Oaks and into Calabasas. All five were caught. Just before 4 p.m. June 27, a 79-year old Camarillo man and a 77-year-old Westlake Village woman called 911 to report that they had […]
