The emergency room surgeon will be leaving the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center for the foreseeable future as Dominic Rains is departing the show, as reported by Deadline.

While it's still unknown if the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor will reprise the character in a guest capacity in the upcoming 10th season, it was the Season 9 finale of Chicago Med which set up the exit for Rains' Crockett.

In the final episode of the season, Crockett was told by Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) to take all the time he needs following the deaths of one of his patients, a child, and the boy’s father.

The boy died after Crockett canceled his planned liver transplant due to an infection, ignoring the father’s pleas to proceed with the surgery to save his son's life.

Following the boy’s death, the father, heartbroken over the loss of his son, took his own life.

News of the boy's death, along with the boy's father, disturbed Crockett as it dredged up memories of losing his baby daughter to leukemia.

Chicago Med, which follows the day-to-day chaos of the city’s newest state-of-the-art trauma center and the lives of its doctors, nurses, and staff, is undergoing a major transition heading into next fall.

Co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider are stepping down after nine years and are being succeeded by Allen MacDonald.

TEE'S RETURN?

Earlier this month, Chicago Med star Brian Tee, 47, teased a possible comeback for his character after leaving the series in 2022.

He formerly played Dr. Ethan Choi on the series for nearly eight seasons.

Since his departure, the actor has returned to the NBC drama to direct two episodes.

In terms of his character, Brian recently teased fans could see more from Dr. Choi in the future during an interview at the Gotham TV Awards.

“There’s always conversation [about] returning on screen,” the actor told TVLine.

“It’s interesting. I think, every season, Chicago Med goes through a bit of a flux.

"But I get to come back, and I play with all the cast and the crew on the director side of things.

"So we’ll always start that conversation, and if the right time or the right storyline comes along, maybe it might happen.

"So it’s kind of one of those things that you never say goodbye to," he teased.

THINKING OUT LOUD

Brian also proposed an idea of the type of story scenario needed for his character to return to the show.

“I think probably the hospital needs help. Some kind of tragedy is about to happen, some kind of major catastrophe drama," Brian guessed.

One Chicago

The Chicago franchise consists of four shows created by Dick Wolf, Michael Brandt, and Derek Haas.

  • Chicago Fire - series that premiered in 2012
  • Chicago P.D. - a spinoff of Chicago Fire that began in 2014
  • Chicago Med - a spinoff of Chicago Fire that began in 2015
  • Chicago Justice - a spinoff of Chicago P.D. that was canceled in 2017

"Maybe they bring back myself and Will Halstead and April and bring back some of the old crew to kind of fix things to what it was."

With some experience under his belt, Brian also said that he would be interested in expanding his directing resume to other series in the Chicago franchise.

“That would be my next thing. It’s not quite on the docket yet. I mean, it’s on the docket for me, hopefully. So we’ll see," he explained.

“Everyone there, as far as P.D. and Fire, are doing incredible work. And I know it’s a lot harder to shoot because they shoot outside.

"Us on Chicago Med get to be indoors most of the time. So that will be much more of an adventure as far as my directing is concerned," he continued.
