Patrick Mahomes left in disbelief at US Open finale as he hails Bryson DeChambeau’s ‘great bunker shot’

PATRICK Mahomes was just like the rest of us as he watched a dramatic US Open finale Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, 28, enjoyed the heavyweight duel between Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy.

And Mahomes was gripped by the drama that unfolded on the greens at Pinehurst in North Carolina.

DeChambeau won his second US Open title in the most unbelievable finish.

He began the day with a three-shot lead over McIlroy but saw that eroded with some wild drives.

McIlroy looked in control as he drew level and then opened up a two-shot lead on the back nine.

But the Northern Irishman had a putting nightmare as he missed a number string of short ones.

And his disastrous miss on 18 let DeChambeau in with a chance to steal.

The 2020 US Open champion needed an epic bunker shot to get out of trouble on the 18th.

He went on to sink a short putt and celebrated in style after capturing his second title.

Mahomes tweeted a couple times while watching the golf.

He said, "great bunker shot" after DeChambeau's chip on the 18th.

Mahomes also tweeted "wow" while the drama was unfolding.

It's not known quite what drew that reaction from the Chiefs quarterback given the twists and turns on the back nine.

Mahomes is used to providing drama in the sporting arena as well.

He led the Kansas City Chiefs to their third Super Bowl title in five years in February.

Mahomes threw a touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman to complete a 25-22 victory against the San Francisco 49ers.

That overtime victory added to his win last year over the Philadelphia Eagles as well as back in 2020 against the 49ers.

Mahomes and his Chiefs teammates were presented with their Super Bowl rings last week in a downtown ceremony.

The new rings had 529 diamonds as well as a nod to the "Tom and Jerry" play which won the game at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
