Included within the deal was a £12million option to buy should Frankfurt choose to trigger a permanent move.

But according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Van de Beek's agent, Guido Albers, has now confirmed Frankfurt will NOT buy the ex-Ajax man.

It means he will return to Man Utd in the summer as he searches for an alternative move.

Albers also told ESPN’s Goedemorgen Eredivisie that Man Utd will not sell to a fellow Premier League club.

He said: "Donny does not want to stay in the Premier League, also because United do not want that. That is not a good choice for him.

"He needs to return to a club that plays good football. In any case, he will not return to Ajax.

"My preference was to look in Spain, Italy or France. If I could get him in Spain or Italy that would be fantastic, at a club where he will play as a No10 like he played at Ajax.

"You see that the Dutch are successful in a certain way in Spanish or Italian football.

"He was very close to a transfer to Real Sociedad last summer. That was cancelled at the last minute because Erik ten Hag wanted to keep him until the last minute. Then he ended up at Frankfurt."

Van de Beek has failed to register a goal contribution in eight appearances for Frankfurt.

He has started just four games in four months for the Bundesliga outfit.

Van de Beek has struggled for minutes ever since arriving at Man Utd from Ajax nearly four years ago.

He arrived for £40m having flourished at Ajax, scoring 41 goals and assisting 34 in 175 games.

He was an instrumental part of Erik ten Hag's side that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

But he has never found his feet in Manchester, playing just 62 games across four campaigns.

In that time, he has scored two goals and provided two assists.

The disappointing Frankfurt loan comes after he also spent time at Everton in 2022, leaving with just seven appearances and one goal under his belt.

It is expected Man Utd will take around a £30m hit on Van de Beek in the summer as they look to finally get him off their books.
