Shark attacks in 2023

In 2023, there were 79 shark bites globally.

Of that number, 69 were unprovoked and 10 were provoked fatal bites.

The United States had 36 unprovoked attacks which accounted for 52% of the incidents worldwide.

Two of the attacks, one in California and the other in Hawaii, were fatal.

Consistently, Florida has had the most attacks in the country with 2023 being no different. The Sunshine State had 16 attacks last year.

Three of the 10 fatalities in 2023 happened in a remote surfing spot off the coast of southern Australia known as The Eyre Peninsula.

The area is home to seals, so they lure in great whites.

The other five fatal attacks were spread out across the globe with one in the Bahamas, Egypt, Mexico, and New Caledonia.

According to Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File

Arryn Van Slyke shared how her 10-year-old daughter was left with eight stitches after an unknown animal bit her in Virginia, The U.S. Sun has previously reported.

The incident happened around 9:20 am on June 20.

"They really weren’t that deep," Van Slyke said about her children, per NBC affiliate WAVY.

"They were probably, like, a little bit above their knees and they were just jumping and then all of a sudden they came running out."

"I looked down at her foot and I see like the whole, like bite mark and then there was one part where like her flesh was showing, so of course I’m like just completely in shock," she added.

The child was taken to a local hospital and an image showed the severity of the injury.
