Tornado watch lifted for Nashville, Middle Tennessee as remnants of Beryl move through area

The National Weather Service lifted a tornado watch for parts of Middle Tennessee around 6 p.m. after the remnants of Hurricane Beryl pushed through the region, bringing the possibility of tornadoes, isolated hail and wind gusts as strong as 70 mph north of Interstate 40.

The watch included several Middle Tennessee counties including Davidson, Hickman, Cheatham, Humphreys, Rutherford, Sumner, Wilson and others. It was lifted as storms decreased in coverage, the weather service said.

Beryl's remnants had the ability to produce quick, spin up tornadoes, said the weather service.

A spin up tornado is a tornado that's on the ground for a short period of time, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Scott Unger. "[These are] very typical with tropical environments, which is what we're dealing with today as these storms are bands from the remnants of Beryl," he said.

According to the weather service, the storm bands pushed northeast on Tuesday. Areas west of Interstate 65 were at the most risk. On Tuesday afternoon, the storm prediction center expanded the slight risk further south and recommended people remain weather aware.

"Rain will be heavy with the storms, but storm motions will be progressive enough to keep flooding from being much of a threat," said the weather service.

Outside of the tornado threat, heat index values will reach the 100s Tuesday. Much of the area will reach temperatures in the high 90s, combined with the humidity heat index values will reach around 105. Dry conditions are expected throughout the weekend and some slight chances for rain return early next week, said the weather service.
