The US Open is down to the final four and in the women’s draw it has attracted a stellar cast, headlined by Aryna Sabalenka who will replace Iga Swiatek as world No 1 at the conclusion of the tournament.

Sabalenka has barely broken sweat on her way to the semi-finals and the reigning Australian Open champion will be hoping to record a sixth consecutive straight-sets success at the expense of home hope Madison Keys.

While Keys could be in for a tough time against the hard-hitting Belarusian, another American may have plenty to celebrate. Cori Gauff is bidding to see off the challenge of the rejuvenated Czech Karolina Muchova.

Gauff is in imperious form, having won 10 successive matches, and unlikely to disappoint her strong following at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Gauff can come through a three-set thriller

The American made light work of Muchova in the Cincinnati final last month, triumphing 6-3, 6-4 to claim her third title of the season, and many will be expecting Gauff to confirm that superiority in this US Open semi-final.

The 19-year-old has taken her game to new heights this campaign and that was evident in her quarter-final victory over Jelena Ostapenko, who had earlier silenced Swiatek, as she bulldozed her way to a 6-0, 6-2 win in only 69 minutes.

However, Ostapenko had much less recovery time than Gauff after their respective fourth-round successes and the Latvian would have used up a lot of energy in overcoming the top seed.

So that means the form should not be taken too literally and a resilient Muchova may be tougher to overcome than she was in Cincinnati.

Tenth seed Muchova was equally as devastating in her quarter-final victory over Sorana Cirstea, as she brushed aside the Romanian 6-0, 6-3.

The Czech has dropped only one set during the tournament and, having suffered only three defeats in her 16 matches during this hard-court campaign, is evidently full of belief.

But home-court advantage should be a huge plus for Gauff and she can overcome in a three-set thriller, just as she did overpowering Laura Siegemund, Elise Mertens and Caroline Wozniacki in earlier rounds.

Super Sabalenka proving tough to stop

The Belarusian has made the semi-final of all four grand slams this season and that scintillating form ensures she will replace Swiatek as world No 1.

Sabalenka claimed her maiden major in Australia at the start of the year and some breathtaking displays in New York mean she is a strong favourite to add to that tally.

The 25-year-old has won all five of her Flushing Meadows encounters 2-0 and in only one of the 10 sets she has contested has she dropped more than three games.

With her brutal serve and power hitting, it is difficult to see how Sabalenka can be contained. Keys faces a formidable test.

The American, revitalised this term, is bidding to make her first grand slam final since finishing runner-up to Sloane Stephens at Flushing Meadows in 2017.

However, the 28-year-old was decisively beaten by Sabalenka 6-2, 6-4 in the Wimbledon quarter-finals in July and another straight-sets defeat looks likely against the newly crowned best female player on the planet.
