Wolves can frustrate ambitious Magpies

After finishing fourth last season, Newcastle have been relentlessly moving up the table in recent weeks following a slow start to this campaign.

Since losing 3-1 at Brighton at the start of September, the Magpies have gone five games without a loss, winning four times, with the stand-out result in that spell their 8-0 hammering of Sheffield United.

Eddie Howe’s side are sixth, three points adrift of the side directly above them, Aston Villa, and have the look of a team well capable of finishing in the Champions League places again this term.

However, their away form this season has been indifferent, with that big victory at Bramall Lane their only victory on the road in all competitions.

The Magpies were just minutes away from beating West Ham in their most recent away assignment, only for David Moyes’s men to equalise late on, and a point may be all they get from their trip to Molineux.

Wolves began the season with four defeats in their first five league games but performances were not as bad as those results suggested.

They have since markedly improved, with Gary O’Neil’s team taking eight points from their past four matches, a run that includes a fine home win over champions Manchester City, a late away victory at Bournemouth and draws with Luton and Villa.

O’Neil has not been afraid to play an enterprising brand of attacking football, particularly at home, and his side can again be rewarded with another point on Saturday.

Cunha poses clear danger

Matheus Cunha has scored two goals this season and eight of his 17 shots in the league this term have been on target.

The Brazilian forward has generally been used as the main central striker by O’Neil and he is getting good service from in-form wingers Hwang Hee-chan and Pedro Neto.

Cunha was particularly accurate last weekend against Bournemouth, with four of his five efforts testing the goalkeeper.

He looks good value at 4/1 to have two or more shots on target against Newcastle.

Dawson card part of bet builder

The bet builder selection for this clash features each side to score and a card for Wolves defender Craig Dawson.

Both teams have scored in Wolves’ previous seven games in all competitions and the West Midlands outfit have failed to get on the scoresheet in only one match this season – an opening 1-0 defeat at Manchester United when they carved out several great chances.

Newcastle have also scored in all but one of their nine league games, with a 1-0 loss at Manchester City their only exception, and that further suggests that both sides will find the net at Molineux.

Finally, backing a card to be shown to home defender Dawson bumps up the bet builder odds to 3.65/1. The experienced centre back has been booked three times this term and is likely to have a busy evening as he attempts to keep Newcastle’s talented attackers at bay.

The Magpies have tricky runners from midfield and out wide but they also have a skilful and pacy frontman in the shape of Callum Wilson, so Dawson is likely to have his hands full.
