Bees can make a bright start

Only Manchester City grabbed the first goal in more home games than Brentford last season, with the Bees opening the scoring in 14 of their 19 matches at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Whether the loss of Ivan Toney to suspension affects the ability of Thomas Frank’s side to get their noses in front remains to be seen, but the England striker was responsible for only five of those 14 deadlock-breaking hits.

No one talks about third-season syndrome, but the forthcoming campaign could become Brentford’s biggest struggle for top-flight survival if no one can step up to replace the frontman’s undoubted goal threat.

However, they proved that they can get great results without their top scorer when winning 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last May. The Bees can get off to a good start here against a Spurs side who could take time to gel under new boss Ange Postecoglou.

Stubborn Spurs boss could play right into hosts’ hands

Postecoglou failed to win any of his first three games at Celtic, but came good in the end, although he may have bitten off a bit more than he can chew with the current Spurs project.

Talisman Harry Kane’s prolonged exit to Bayern Munich has been tough to deal with, as the new boss’s plans for the whole 2023-24 campaign are likely to have hinged on whether the England skipper stuck around or not

Richarlison is likely to step into Kane’s boots in the short term while a replacement is sought, but the Brazilian reportedly suffered an injury in training this week so could be a doubt to face the Bees.

Postecoglou will not sacrifice his principles and go to Brentford with an Antonio Conte-style counter-attacking plan. He will demand that his players get on the ball and play on the front foot.

But this could play right into the hands of Brentford, who scored the fourth most goals on the break in the Premier League last term.

Wise to include Wissa in bet builders

Last season, Brentford won seven of their 10 Premier League games when they had two corners or fewer and won only three of their 14 contests when they were awarded six corners or more.

It is a strange statistic, but illustrates how little they rely on those types of set pieces to achieve positive results – perhaps against the general perception of the team.

The Bees are unlikely to operate with much width in this game and neither full back will be expected to overlap on too many occasions, so it seems likely the hosts will not accumulate many corners

They registered fewer than 3.5 corners in exactly half their league games last term, so the 23/10 odds about that happening on Sunday are well worth adding to bet builders.

Alongside that, take Tottenham – who were awarded exactly 20 more cards than Brentford in the league in 2022-23 – to receive the most cautions.

And add in Yoane Wissa to score or assist in the game. The attacker did both in that 3-1 win at Spurs in May and looks set to assume the central striker’s mantle for the Bees in Toney’s absence.

Brentford vs Tottenham tip 3: Under 3.5 Brentford corners, Tottenham to receive the most cards and Yoane Wissa to score or assist @ 16/1 with Paddy Power
