Syracuse Media Group editorial board’s mission: to advocate for the community’s best interests (Editorial)

The unfettered expression of opinion was critical in motivating our forebears to create America and its liberties. They valued it so much that they enshrined freedom of speech and freedom of the press in the First Amendment of the Constitution. We take that responsibility seriously.

One way we carry it out is by using our editorial voice, which evolved as print media evolved. In the newspaper, opinions get their own space, physically separated from the news pages. Editorials appear without a byline. They express the view of the newspaper as a community institution and reflect a consensus of the three people who make up the editorial board.

Our editorials and opinion also appear online, where the lines between news and opinion are less clearly drawn. Users unfamiliar with the conventions of the newspaper may ask why we write them.

So today we publish our current mission statement to remind readers, users and ourselves what we strive to accomplish through our editorials and opinion. As our journalistic mission evolves and electronic journalism continues to grow, over time, so too will our statement of principles.

The mission of the Syracuse Media Group editorial board

The editorial board of Syracuse Media Group advocates for the best interests of Syracuse and Central New York through editorials, and provides a community forum for a variety of viewpoints. Our key objectives are to:

  • Defend free speech.
  • Promote openness, transparency and civil discourse in government and public life.
  • Lead the conversation on vital community issues.
  • Host conversations with readers, users, experts, newsmakers and opinion leaders on local issues and issues of local interest.
  • Endorse candidates in key local and statewide elections to encourage and reward responsible and responsive governance, and to inform voters’ choices.
  • Celebrate our community’s successes and spotlight its shortcomings.
  • Call for actions that make life better for the people of Syracuse and Central New York.

How we work

Editorials represent the consensus of the editorial board. As such, editorials are unsigned. We strive to write strong opinions that respect opposing views, yet argue forcefully for a clear outcome. Our opinions are informed by editorial board meetings with experts and stakeholders, the reporting of our staff and our own reporting. The opinions of the editorial board are separate from news and advertising.
