Cicero, N.Y. — Oneida Shores Park beach has been closed until further notice due to high bacteria level, county officials said Tuesday.

The Onondaga County Health Department banned swimming due to a high presence of E. coli bacteria, the department said in a release today.

The health department will be monitoring the lake water daily and swimming will be allowed when the levels are acceptable, officials said. Other activities at park are not affected, they said

Most E. coli strains are harmless and cause brief diarrhea, but some types can cause gastrointestinal illness, they said.

For those looking to swim, the county’s Jamesville Beach is open, they said. The city of Syracuse also has pools and splash pads open (list)
