One person dead after police traffic stop in North Country, police say

Watertown, N.Y. — One person has died after a police traffic stop in the North Country on Monday, police said.

At 7:19 p.m. the Watertown Police Department stopped a vehicle in the 600 block of Water Street, police said. Police did not say why the vehicle was stopped but called the stop “routine.”

A passenger in the vehicle ran from police and was caught, police said. While walking the passenger back to the vehicle, the person appeared to have a medical issue, police said.

The passenger was taken to Samaritan Medical Center hospital in Watertown for treatment and died, police said.

The cause of death has yet to be determined, police said.

The Attorney General’s Office is conducting a preliminary assessment to see if they will open a formal investigation, a spokesperson said.
