WASHINGTON — When Lars Nootbaar strolled back into the Cardinals’ clubhouse to join the team for the first time in a month, he did so past a dry-erase marker board and an 8½-by-11 sheet of paper adorned with a few patriotic logos and the starting lineup.
A closer look would quickly reveal its curiosities.
Facing a left-handed starter for the fifth-consecutive time, a Cardinals team that is one of the worst this season against lefties had … a lineup chock-full with left-handed batters. Nootbaar, back from injury and batting seventh, was one of four consecutive left-handed batters in the back half of the lineup. Once he got through Nolan Arenado at No. 5, Nationals lefty Mitchell Parker would face five left-handed hitters in the next six batters.
“Right?” Nootbaar said when asked his reaction to seeing the lineup. “It is a different look for sure. Not really conventional. Usually you’re looking for lefty bats in a lineup. With us, we’ve got a plethora, for sure.”

There was, of course, purpose for that plethora.
A trip that saw the reanimation of the Cardinals’ offense climaxed Monday with a 6-0 victory against Washington at Nationals Park. Miles Mikolas sped through 61/3 superb shutout innings, and home runs from Paul Goldschmidt and Alec Burleson lifted the Cardinals to their fifth win of the trip. But within the fine print was the strategy behind all those lefties and how a left handed-laden roster is finding direction, a true north against southpaws. The Cardinals, who are hitting an NL-worst .222 vs. lefties this season, went 4-1 in their five consecutive games against lefty starters.

Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas doffs his cap as he walks back to the dugout after he was removed during the seventh inning against the Washington Nationals on Monday, July 8, 2024, in Washington.
That secured them a 12th win in their past 17 games, and with Monday’s victory they improved to 13-1 in their past 14 series finales.
“It’s about time we start playing like we’re supposed to,” Mikolas said. “The fans got upset with us last year because we weren’t playing good ball. The boos, I know, started a little bit early this year. And we’ve managed to turn it around.”
For the offense, that’s come with the return of Willson Contreras, one of the right-handed bats they’ve missed against lefties. Entering Monday’s game, the only NL team less productive against left-handed pitchers this season than the Cardinals was the Marlins. The Cardinals’ .624 OPS vs. lefties ranks 29th in the 30-team majors, as does their slugging percentage (.336) and on-base percentage (.238). With Contreras on the injured list recovering from a fractured arm, the Cardinal with the highest OPS vs. lefties was Matt Carpenter, a left-handed bat with a .795 OPS.
At the core of the Cardinals’ struggles against lefties is their former MVP finalists, Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. Goldschmidt’s career OPS vs. lefties is 1.008, but this season its .706. Arenado has a career slugging percentage of .571 vs. lefties; it’s .383 this season.
“When you look at Nolan and ‘Goldy’ — those guys will come around, and they’re a big part of what your numbers look like against left-handers,” manager Oliver Marmol said. “The other side of it is you just have a lot of lefties on the roster who play left on left. It’s not a matter of what do you do? Those guys will continue to take their at-bats against lefties and we don’t really platoon, for the most part. It’s not going to look this way moving forward. It just won’t.”
Nootbaar’s return from an oblique strain and Burleson’s thunderous June as an everyday player keeps two left-handed batters in the lineup.
Marmol decided to stack most of the lefties in Monday’s lineup because of how it might cross-wire Nats starter Parker’s approach. In his rookie season, Parker has quieted right-handed batters more than lefties, .639 OPS to .701 OPS. A major factor is a split-finger fastball he throws 18% of the time. It’s a pitch he uses mostly against right-handed batters, and the Cardinals’ thinking was he might pocket it when facing so many left-handed hitters.
Only six of his 91 pitches were splitters.
Four of the six hits he allowed, including two infield hits, were by left-handed batters. The other two belonged to Goldschmidt.
“He becomes a two-pitch guy with fastball-slider mix,” Marmol said. “You eliminate a pitch that is pretty good and has good action. … You look at how we attacked starters. We knew coming in from the last day of Pittsburgh, our strength hasn’t been against left-handed starters. We were going to have to grind. I do feel like we did exactly that. We threw some good at-bats on them. Credit to our offense. It’s starting to come alive.”

Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas doffs his cap as he walks back to the dugout after he was removed during the seventh inning against the Washington Nationals on Monday, July 8, 2024, in Washington.
Left-handed slugger Nolan Gorman’s infield single followed by left-handed speedster Michael Siani’s bunt single mixed with an error to produce the Cardinals’ first run. Goldschmidt doubled the score with his 12th homer — a solo shot — to lead off the fourth. Mikolas (7-7) pitched most of his game with a lead no larger than two runs, and all of those left-handed batters in the Cardinals’ lineup played a factor.
“Keeps your best defense in,” Marmol said.
Twice, Siani tracked down deep fly balls and stole extra-base hits from the Nationals. His play and the good-hands team around him allowed Mikolas to keep a brisk pace and do what he does best — invite contact, with a twist.
A fastball-hungry lineup, Washington devoured them from Lance Lynn in the Cardinals’ only loss of the weekend wraparound series. Veterans Kyle Gibson and Mikolas presented different looks. Gibson utilized three different off-speed pitches in his win Sunday, and Mikolas threw more sliders Monday than he did fastballs, the latter of which “sank when I needed it to and didn’t when I told it not to,” he said.
“The plan is to go out there and see what they’re doing,” said Mikolas, who scattered six hits, struck out three, and walked none. “Let’s feel them out. Let’s do our best to stay around the edges. You’ve got a team that swings early, and they’re looking for fastballs. I’m not going to give it to them. And, if I do, I want it to be in my spot.”
And he wants it to be fast.
With a first-pitch temp of 96 degrees, the peppier the innings the better.
“It’s hot,” Mikolas said. “I’m trying to get in and out of there. I’m trying to get off the field as quick as I can — out of the heat and into my little dungeon spot there with some buckets of ice, a fan, and watching the delayed feed on the TV.”
Once he was out of the game, the Cardinals’ offense iced it.
Burleson led off the eighth inning with a home run, his 14th of the season, and added a two-run single in the ninth. The Cardinals scored four runs in their final two at-bats and Burleson had three of the four RBIs. The stretch of four left-handed batters at the bottom of the Cardinals’ lineup finished the day 7 for 16.
Through the challenge of five consecutive lefty starters in five days, the Cardinals scored 16 runs against them, had 29 hits in their 27 innings, and reached base twice as often (40) as they struck out (20). The opposing starters went 0-2 with three no decisions.
Or, how Goldschmidt summed it all up.
“Just playing better,” Goldschmidt said. “I don’t really have any other way to say it besides that.”
