FENTON — Lauren Seppi let out a roar that would have made a lion proud.
The Nerinx Hall senior forward bellowed at the top of her lungs seconds after drilling a penalty kick to give the Markers a 2-1 overtime win over Eureka in the Class 4 girls soccer state championship match Saturday at Soccer Park.
"It was so crazy I didn't know what to do, how to react," Seppi said.
Loudly. With good reason.
The Markers (17-3-1) erased the frustration of four successive second-place finishes by capturing the hard-fought instant classic in front of a huge crowd.
And fittingly, the title-clinching tally came from a four-year starter who has made an indelible mark on the program.
"This just means so much to all of us," Nerinx Hall senior forward Haylee Braun said. "But it was especially great to see (Seppi) get the winner. She means everything to this team."

The Markers, who went unbeaten over their last 10 matches, claimed their second overall championship to go along with a crown in 1988.
They did so in the most dramatic fashion with one of the area's top players converting on a perfectly placed penalty kick in the 108th minute.
"Literally, I just stepped up and said, 'This is going in the back of the net,' " said Seppi, who is bound for the University of Illinois. "I didn't care what it takes. I knew I was going to drill it home."
Seppi smashed a pinpoint shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net just above the outstretched fingertips of Eureka goalkeeper Stella Eremita and an inch or two below the crossbar.
The strike was so well positioned that even St. Louis City FC keeper Roman Burki would have had trouble stopping it.
"She's perfect on things like that," Nerinx Hall freshman Sofia Scego said.
Seppi improved to 3-0 on penalty kicks this season.
Scego, the only freshman in the starting lineup, set up the game-winning sequence with a hustle play that is typical of this gritty group. She charged after a loose ball in the box and collided with Eremita. The ball squirted away from Eremita, who grabbed Scego's leg in an attempt to keep her from tapping it into the wide-open net.
A foul was called on Eremita and rightfully so, according to Eureka coach Michael Hanna.
"There's nothing to argue about that," Hanna said. "She got tangled up. It's unfortunate. But that's how it goes."
Nerinx Hall controlled play for long stretches and outshot Eureka 15-9. The Markers also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
But the Wildcats (20-4) battled back from a first half deficit to tie the contest 1-all on a header goal by senior Blaine Schutte off a nifty long free kick from Caroline Orf in the 51st minute.
Nerinx Hall grabbed a 1-0 lead on a tally by junior Anna Rosenberg two minutes before the halftime break. Braun set up the score with a pass on the toe of Rosenberg, who buried the blast from six yards out.
The two teams battled tooth and nail throughout the second half and the first 12 minutes and 33 seconds of the second 15-minute golden goal extra period.
The match appeared to be heading to penalty kicks before Scego's hustle and Seppi's marksmanship saved the day for the Markers.
"What a great battle, the two right teams were here," Nerinx Hall coach Brian Haddock said. "A classic."
Nerinx Hall fell short in the last four title matches, losing to Liberty North 4-3 in OT last season and 1-0 to St. Dominic in 2022. St. Dominic also beat Nerinx Hall 3-1 in the 2021 championship contest, and Liberty-KC topped Nerinx Hall 3-1 in a 2019 title match.
"This is the best feeling ever," said Markers senior keeper Caroline Ritter, who made three big saves. "I don't think I've ever smiled this big in my entire life."
Ritter, who improved to 17-3-1, is one of six senior starters who can remember the heartache of the second-place finishes.
"I can't wait to celebrate," Ritter said. "We don't really have a plan yet — but we're going to find one."
The loss put an end to a strong run from the Wildcats, who were searching for their third overall title in their fourth final four appearance. Their three losses prior to Saturday came against area powers St. Joseph's, Class 3 champion Cor Jesu and Edwardsville.
"I can't be happier for (our) girls and the season they had," Hanna said. "I enjoyed the hell out of the ride."
