Genesis Garner, Lutheran North track and field
The Crusaders sophomore won two individual events and also was part of a winning relay on her home track during the Class 2 District 2 meet. A sophomore, Garner captured the 200-meter title in 24.96 seconds, won the 400 in 58.65 and helped the Crusaders win the 800 relay with a time of 1:49.17, edging runner-up Principia by .49 of a second. Garner also ran on North’s 1600 relay that finished third. Garner is in her second season as a standout sprinter for the Crusaders. She ran a leg on North’s Class 2 state championship 800 relay last season and also finished as runner-up in the 200 and 400 during her freshman campaign.

Kaden Goodyear, Fort Zumwalt East tennis
A sophomore who has been playing tennis for a little more than three years, Goodyear became the first district singles champion in program history when he captured the Class 2 District 4 title. Goodyear dropped only seven games over three matches in the tournament, culminating with his 6-1, 6-0 victory against Duchesne’s Nathan Nickel in the final. Earlier this season, Goodyear won the No. 1 singles bracket in the Gateway Athletics Conference tournament. He has been the No. 1 singles player at Zumwalt East in both of his seasons and will play in his first state tournament May 16-17 at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield.

The Bulldogs won their first district team championship since 2000 behind a medalist outing by Mesplay. A senior, Mesplay made birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to shoot 4-under-par 67 at The Golf Club of Wentzville. He won the individual district crown by three shots over Ladue’s Grant Bautista (70) and helped Zumwalt South to a team score of 305, good for a five-shot win over Ladue’s 310. Mesplay and the Bulldogs qualified for the second successive season as a team for the Class 4 state tournament and will play May 13-14 at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau. Mesplay’s district title came two days after he tied for medalist honors in the GAC Central tournament at Wolf Hollow in Washington.

A junior third baseman, Rauser helped the Vikings earn their first outright GAC South Division title since 2021 last week by sweeping a two-game conference series against Fort Zumwalt West for the first time since 2018. Rauser went 6 for 10 in three games last week, including a 3-for-4 showing with two RBI in a 4-3 extra-inning victory against the Jaguars that sewed up the outright conference crown. Rauser leads the Vikings this season with a .346 batting average, including a team-leading 36 hits. He’s tied for the team lead with 26 RBI and has 15 stolen bases and 19 runs scored. Defensively, he’s been a stalwart with only two errors and a .963 fielding percentage.

A freshman, Shy was crowned the Gateway Athletics Conference North Division player of the year after winning the league tournament at St. Peters Golf Course with a 3-over-par 73. Shy was undefeated in GAC North dual matches and medaled in every tournament this season, topped by a 3-under 67 to capture medalist honors last month in the 48th Warrenton Invitational’s Red Division at Warrenton Golf Course. On Monday in the Class 3 District 2 tournament, Shy finished fourth individually with a 2-over 72 at Innsbrook Resort Golf Course. He helped West qualify for the state tournament as a team for the first time since 2013 with a runner-up district finish.

A senior, Tiemann continued his unbeaten season by winning the Class 3 District 1 singles championship. Tiemann’s title earned a third consecutive appearance in the Class 3 state tournament but his first in singles. The Tigers’ No. 1 player since he was a freshman, Tiemann improved to 19-0 this season after pulling out a three-set victory in the title match and advanced to play May 16-17 at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. He won district doubles titles as a sophomore and junior with partner Danijel Blagojevic, and they finished sixth at state in 2023. Tiemann has committed to continue his career for the Coe College Kohawks.

The Blue Jays captured the Class 2 District 2 team championship as Wrigley won two individual events and anchored a relay to a victory. A junior, Wrigley captured the 100-meter dash in 12.46 seconds and won the long jump with a leap of 5.32 meters (17 feet, 5.5 inches). She helped Jefferson’s 400 relay to victory in 49.75 seconds and was second in the 200 in 25.34 seconds. Wrigley owns school records in the 100 and long jump and was a member of the 400 relay that set a program record. She earned medals in four events at last season’s Class 2 state meet (100, 200, long jump, 400 relay) and was a three-event state qualifier as a freshman.
