I watched the presidential debate and then listened to commentary. I wonder if I was listening to the same program as everyone else.
What I saw was two people — one of whom took the time to actually answer the questions posed to him in a thoughtful manner, and one who always had to go back to his opponent's previous answer and often did not answer the question posed even when asked again by the moderators. I saw a quiet, thoughtful person, and a bombastic man who said whatever was on his mind.
Who do I trust to lead this country? The quiet, thoughtful person.
I also know that too many people are naive about the world in general. Inflation is an international phenomena and the U.S. has one of the lowest rates in the industrialized world. Regarding international relations, we can only suggest to other countries the steps we think they should take to resolve their conflicts — we are not in control of them.
I know that gas prices are controlled more by OPEC than by the U.S. and that supply and demand affect pricing of everything.
And I know from working for over 40 years in international trade that tariffs of the kind Donald Trump wants to raise are paid by the importers — and ultimately by buyers like you and me. Maybe President Joe Biden didn't win the debate on presentation, but policy is more important.
