1945: Allexander Fleming
Sir Alexander Fleming, discoverer of the germ killing penicillin, saw for the first time its dramatic mass-production in America. Escorted by scientists who are still improving the extraction and uses of the drug, Professor Fleming toured the New Brunswick Laboratories of E. R. Squibb and Sons, Pioneer Manufacturer of penicillin in this country. When bomb-torn London was unable to supply the large-scale facilities necessary to extract the life-saving powder from mold cultures, the Rockefeller Foundation invited Dr. Howard Florey of Oxford University to help the United States to develop a speedy way to grow the mold. This research enabled the commercial production which now supplies the armed forces and civilians with ample quantities.
