Ryan Sell, of Barnhart, shows his mother, Laura, and his sons Atlast, 9, and Summit, 5, a prop gun in a violin case at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis prop sale on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the Lemp Brewery Warehouse in the Marine Villa neighborhood. He bought the item that was receiving lots of interest from shoppers.
ST. LOUIS — A large crowd waited outside a warehouse at the Lemp Brewery in Marine Villa huddled on Wednesday under umbrellas, enthusiastic despite the rain.
They were there for the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis’ first-ever prop sale, which proved more popular than anticipated. According to staffers, more than 200 cars and about 400 people showed up in the first half hour. People were let in in small groups due to space constraints.
Inside, the two-story warehouse was packed with props, old and new: Antique clocks and rotary phones were stacked next to horse saddles and vintage dolls. One woman ran by clutching a giant barracuda puppet.
For almost 60 years, the Rep has amassed a collection of theatrical props, which include just about everything you would find on stage except the costumes: 10-foot-wide rugs, chairs, sofas, a set of cheetah-print luggage that doesn’t open.

Danny Williams, managing director of the Rep, said that the purpose of the sale is to make more room in the warehouse.
“This has been on my to-do list for a while,” Williams said. “We have so much stuff, we barely have an idea of what it all is.”
Items are roughly organized into categories: a row of painted lawn jockeys and other knee-high statues, pianos beside an accordion and knick-knacks piled in bins for shoppers to dig through.
Weeks prior, in collaboration with estate company Pennies in Your Pocket, the Rep sifted through its inventory to set aside any items that it thought it would use again. It also let other theater companies buy items before the sale opened to the public.
Williams says the Rep hopes to make about $25,000 from the sale, which will be used to prepare for the upcoming season.
“Once the sale is done, we’ll be able to consolidate our inventory, and then really grow again from there, in a way where we just have better inventory and we can better partner with other theater companies in the community,” Williams said. The Rep rents out its props to other theaters.
One shopper, Jeremy Rentfro, found out about the event from TikTok.
“This is a lot,” Rentfro said, eyes wide. “I was surprised by the quality of some of the vintage pieces because they’re all set-dressing for the most part.”
Item prices varied from a couple bucks to a few hundred dollars. All kinds of people swept the aisles, from a sculpture artist looking for a new project to an antique collector digging through a heap of tools.
Sara Kaiman, a shopper from Maplewood, has an online business for anything vintage. She has been going to Rep shows with her parents since she was a little kid.
“When I saw they were selling a bunch of stuff, it seemed like a cool opportunity,” she said. “It’s really cool that you can get a piece of history from the Rep.”
Dave Kutrit, from South County, came to the sale to check out the deals. When asked if he considered himself a collector, his 11-year-old grandson interjected.
“I like collecting,” he said, grinning and holding two dolls for his sisters close to his chest.
One shopper said he planned to come back later this week for whatever might catch his eye.
“We’re hoping that it all finds a good home, whether you’re a collector of rare items, or if you’re a Rep lover and want a piece of history,” Williams said.
The Rep prop sale will continue through Saturday.
The sale is open noon to 7 p.m. Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Lemp Brewery Warehouse on 3500 Lemp Avenue.

"We throw a really big Halloween party every year and have a giant Grim Reaper. We've actually been looking for a scythe," said Erika Brown, who walks around with her find at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis prop sale on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the Lemp Brewery Warehouse in the Marine Villa neighborhood.
