MOHELA, a St. Louis-based quasi-governmental entity dedicated to making higher education accessible, is committed not only to supporting the student borrowers it serves as a loan servicing contractor but also to fostering a positive, family-like environment for its employees whose service helps families in Missouri and across the country. The organization’s dedication to Missouri families is why MOHELA has been selected as a 2024 St. Louis Top Workplace.
With over 40 years of experience, MOHELA has a track record of providing exceptional customer service to the borrowers it serves. The organization employs nearly 1,300 employees across 27 states, including 540 employees in Missouri.
MOHELA’s customer service team assists American families from the start of their repayment journey to their final payment, offering personal assistance to help borrowers understand repayment options, process requests for payment plan changes, keep track of loan payments and more. In 2023, MOHELA’s staff assisted over 6 million student loan borrowers when the pause on federal loan repayments was lifted, facilitating over 3.1 million customer calls and processing over 2.58 million payments.

MOHELA supports its employees with generous tuition reimbursement and private student loan payment reimbursement programs, along with flexible hybrid and remote work options to promote work-life balance. The organization fosters a collaborative environment where staff feel valued, offering a variety of fun activities and recognition programs both in Missouri and across the country. The activities committee organizes events such as game days, charity drives and virtual clubs for crafting, reading and gaming, providing opportunities for employees to build relationships and enhance teamwork outside of work.
Through MOHELA’s PROPS Recognition Committee program, employees are encouraged to share their appreciation for each other. There were over 6,000 messages of recognition and praise exchanged in the first year alone. The MOHELA Cares program allows staff to voluntarily donate assistance to help colleagues during times of need, such as medical emergencies or natural disasters.
MOHELA also gives back to the communities it serves through its foundation. Over the last five years, the Missouri Scholarship and Loan Foundation has assisted over 8,500 students across the state, distributing $17.5 million in scholarships and grants, and $24.2 million in interest-free loans. Additionally, MOHELA contributed $6 million to support state scholarships and grants during the 2023-2024 academic year, in support of its mission to make higher education accessible to all students.
