Building Strategic Partnerships for Smart Mobility

Embarking on a career with ST Engineering is more than just a job – it's an opportunity to be part of something great contributing to key technology and industry ecosystems.

From picking up new languages to navigating market dynamics in Europe and South Asia, discover how Mitchell Fu, Assistant Manager, Business Development, Mobility (Rail & Road), Smart Mobility, Urban Solutions, gains insights into the future of mobility in major cities.

Q: Why did you choose to start a career with ST Engineering?

I’ve always dreamed of being a part of an organisation at the forefront of technology, engineering and innovation. When one thinks about the biggest engineering company based in Singapore, ST Engineering naturally comes to mind. Hence, I did not hesitate to seize the opportunity when it presented itself!

Q: How does the work you do solve real-world problems?

I would like to think of my international business development role as being an ambassador for ST Engineering in my overseas target markets. When I travel to various cities in Europe and South Asia to promote our smart mobility solutions, I interact with key stakeholders and business associates on the ground to gain insights into key challenges impacting the mobility industry. I strive to build strategic partnerships and understand stakeholder needs in mobility ecosystems to strategise how our solutions can help mitigate manpower shortages, address data security concerns, and enhance commuter experiences.

Q: What are some challenges that you face in your role, and how do you overcome them?

Entering a new market has its challenges, with many factors outside our control. Understanding the local business landscape, including regulations, competitors and stakeholder needs, is critical and made more complex by diverse cultures and languages. These challenges motivate me to be adaptable and strategic, finding creative solutions to overcome barriers and seize opportunities.

In a recent German tender, compliance with sustainability regulations was essential. Suppliers had to disclose supply chain information and meet sustainability standards. I was thankful to be able to tap into our Sustainability team’s robust strategies to provide the required information and affirm readiness to meet the customer’s needs.

I also picked up German and Italian to understand new cultures and enhance the rapport with our partners in Europe. It has definitely been useful in breaking down cultural barriers and I’m now planning to take formal lessons to further strengthen my language skills.

Q: Are there any mobility issues or trends you’ve noticed in your target markets?

In Germany, challenges like strikes and inadequate replacement services during infrastructure upgrades, coupled with strong unions and lengthy upgrading periods, negatively impact the success of transport operators and commuter experiences. There is also a growing emphasis on passenger information management and data security, especially with the emergence of AI and cyber threats. Such challenges and trends present opportunities for our smart city solutions to come into play across various sectors in the country.

Q: What’s great about working at ST Engineering?

What makes any company great to work in is always its people! I am grateful to be a part of a dynamic Mobility Rail team that has a strong spirit of unity and support, and encourages open communication. I believe each of us has a place and purpose in the organisation, and our combined strengths will make us a better and higher-achieving team!

Q: What advice do you have for those considering joining ST Engineering?
