What is STAT Wunderkinds?
STAT Wunderkinds is a search for the best early-career researchers in health and medicine in North America. The deadline to enter is 11:59 p.m. ET, July 15, 2024.
Who’s eligible?
Our Wunderkinds are postdoctoral fellows, medical residents, interns, medical fellows, and industry scientists who have completed their terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., D.O., Sci.D., D.D.S., or the equivalent) and are in their first job/training program after, somewhere in North America. A person who started 2024 as a graduate student must have started their postdoc or next step by April 1, 2023. We realize that different fields of science and medicine have unique job categories, so think about it this way: Nominees should be done with their degree, and on the next leg of their career, but not running their own research program independently. Who’s not eligible?
Assistant or associate professors or higher, as of Jan. 1, 2024. People running their own labs or section heads. C-suite level execs, founders, presidents, or executive directors of a company, unless that person is also still truly employed or enrolled as one of the above eligible groups. We also can’t accept nominations for work conducted in institutions or companies outside North America.
Who can nominate?
Anyone. You can nominate your daughter, your mentee, or your lab bench partner. If you are a principal investigator, it can be helpful to coordinate with your public affairs staff. If you are a possible Wunderkind, yes, by all means, nominate yourself.
How many nominations can I make?
We don’t cap nominations, but ask that you be thoughtful.

How many Wunderkinds will there be?
It fluctuates slightly each year. In 2023, we had 28.
Why do you ask for a research paper?
We want to see your nominee’s contributions in their chosen field in 2023 and 2024. We ask that the research paper be from the nominee’s current position. The research paper must be published in a peer-reviewed journal; we can’t accept papers published only on a preprint server at the time of nomination. If a nominee’s paper has been accepted by a peer-reviewed journal but not yet published by the entry deadline, please send an email to [email protected].
What kind of supporting information do you need?
We ask for CVs and resumes because they help us find a wide-ranging pool of Wunderkinds. We ask for headshots if they are available so that we can move forward with promoting our class as quickly as possible once chosen.
What else will you need?
Nominees chosen as Wunderkinds will need to be available for a short interview sometime during late summer/early fall. They are also invited to our annual STAT Summit.

What does a Wunderkind get?
Wunderkinds will be featured on our website and invited to the flagship STAT Summit in Boston, MA. A select few will also be asked to participate in the STAT Summit programming on stage.
