The El Gordo Christmas lottery (Spanish for “The Fat One”) is considered to be the largest lottery worldwide in terms of payout. The draw, which traditionally takes place on December 22nd, is set to dish out a first prize (El Gordo prize) of four million euros among those lottery winners that acquired their décimos or one-tenth tickets, which is the format in which lottery players normally buy their tickets to fortune. That is what 41.5 percent of Christmas lottery players think they would do if they landed the first prize in 2019.
The price of a chance to amass a fortune
The price of a full El Gordo Christmas lottery number is two hundred euros. That is, the price for a whole ticket, which is then broken up into €20 décimos or tenths of a ticket. Spaniards will oftentimes purchase décimos of different numbers to have more chances at winning a prize at the draw. Regarding the amount of money spent, the average in Castile and Leon was nearly 96 euros per person, which topped the list of Spanish regions that spent most money on the El Gordo Christmas lottery in 2019. The northern autonomous community of Asturias ranked second, with an average expenditure of some 88 euros per person.
El Gordo: popularity and sales
El Gordo sales generated almost three billion euros in 2019, according to the most recent data. Madrid was the autonomous community that generated most revenues, with approximately 490 million euros. Andalusia and Catalonia ranked second and third, with sales revenues amounting to over 410 and 368 million euros, respectively. The sales of El Gordo tickets seemed to have gone well across the country, which featured a positive sales growth in all regions.
