Beryl death toll: At least 7 in greater Houston area, 1 in Louisiana killed

At least eight people have died after Tropical Storm Beryl, once a Category 1 hurricane, rampaged through the greater Houston area and into Louisiana and knocked out power for millions of people.

Local law enforcement and emergency management agencies confirmed the deaths Tuesday afternoon. Four occurred in Houston, while three were neighboring Montgomery County. One was in Benton, Louisiana.

This brings the total number of fatalities to 17 since Beryl first made landfall on Carriacou Island, Grenada, on July 1.

4 deaths in and around the city of Houston

Multiple people died Monday in Houston just hours after Beryl made landfall near Matagorda, Texas.

In the first incident, an oak tree fell on a house on the 20900 block of Heather Grove Court of the Kings River Village subdivision, trapping a 53-year-old man under the debris, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote on X.

The man was reportedly sitting in the house with his family, riding out the storm, when the tree fell on the roof, hit the rafters and collapsed a portion of the house on him. His wife and children were unharmed.

A 74-year-old woman was killed after a tree fell on her home in the 17400 block of Rustic Canyon Trail in Atascocita, Gonzalez reported. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Houston Police Department Civilian Security Officer drowned when he was caught in rising flood waters on Houston Avenue while going to work. HPD identified him as 54-year-old Russell Richardson.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said a fourth person died in a fire likely caused by a storm-related lightning strike. A spokesperson with the Houston Office of Emergency Management said they have yet to confirm if this death is storm-related.

3 dead in Montgomery County, Texas, 1 dead in Louisiana

Three people died in Montgomery County, according to its emergency management agency. While driving a tractor, a man in his 40s was hit by a falling tree. Two others were killed after a tree fell on their tent.

A woman was killed in Benton, Louisiana when a tree fell on her house, Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office reported on Facebook.

How many people died before Beryl landed in Texas?

In its first landfall as a hurricane, Beryl slammed into Jamaica, Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, killing at least 11 people. Reported dead were three in Grenada, three in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, three in Venezuela and two in Jamaica.

No deaths have been reported at this time in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
