Rev. Msgr. Joseph Deane, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Austin, died in Georgetown, Texas on June 28, at the age of 89. He was born to Patrick Deane and Mary Farrell on March 19, 1935, in Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland. Msgr. Deane was ordained by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid on June 14, 1959, at All Hallows College in Drumcondra, Dublin, Ireland.

He served in the Archdiocese of San Antonio at Our Lady of Grace in San Antonio, St. Anthony in Columbus, St. Joseph in San Antonio, St. Joseph in Yoakum, Notre Dame in Kerrville, Sacred Heart in Comfort, Our Lady of Peace in Kenedy, St. Ann in San Antonio, and St. Cecilia in San Antonio. His Holiness, Pope John Paul II, named him a Prelate of Honor with the title of “Monsignor” on November 3, 1984.

Msgr. Deane was incardinated to the Diocese of Austin on February 22, 2000, where he served at Santa Cruz Parish in Buda, overseeing the construction of the main sanctuary and the parochial school. He retired in 2009 to the St. John Paul II Residence for Priests in Georgetown. For many years, Msgr. Deane served as the Spiritual Adviser to the Legion of Mary until his health compelled him to resign.

He is preceded in death by his father, Patrick Deane of Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland, his mother Mary Farrell, and his siblings, May Deane, Sr. Mary Immaculate Deane, Rev. Patrick Deane, SDB, Jack Deane and his wife Mary, Mickey Deane and his wife Eileen, Brother Oliver (Tom) Deane, Brother Timothy Deane (St. John of God Brothers) and his nephew Pat Deane.

He is survived by his sister Eileen, sadly not able to travel to Texas for the funeral, his niece Mary and her husband John Duggan, and his grandnieces Carmel, Nora Duggan and her husband Ivan, and relatives and friends.

The funeral liturgies will all be celebrated in the main sanctuary of Santa Cruz Parish in Buda, Texas. On Wednesday July 10, 2024, the Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Vigil for the Deceased and Prayer of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. On Thursday July 11, 2024, the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with Bishop Joe S. Vásquez presiding and Bishop Michael Boulette as homilist. The Rite of Committal will be in County Kerry, Ireland on a later date.
