'Sandy's Hike' Show
12 JUL 2024 · Sandy’s three nieces will be meeting up with us after our hike. We're planning to do about 4 miles, which was perfect. Sandy has been looking after the animals on their hobby farm in Ca. Sandy used to work for the Coast Guard, so she know this area well. She and Glenn stay at the fancy hotel in town when they visit, and love watching the planes come and go. Recently. I've been dealing with gout, but today is the first day I'm not taking any painkillers. As for Glenn & Sandy, they live about three hours from the ocean, in the mountains near the Western States 100 mile finish. Although they’ve both lost their jobs, they’ve managed well financially so far, and Sandy plans to start volunteering at the dog rescue where they got their two Collies. They also have a cat and seven chickens, which Sandy adore.
The Wurtele Loop
10 JUL 2024 · Recovery walking 🚶♀️
Hello everybody, it's Carlos walking here. I've just been in touch with my good old friend Sandy, and she and I are going to hook up on Friday for a walk in this neighbourhood. Afterwards, we're going to go to Spinnakers for lunch, which sounds good. Today, I'm going to take you on the walk that I have done for the past two days, which I call ‘The Wurtele Loop’ workout. I brought my old trusty point-and-shoot camera with me today—this is really old-school podcasting!
The 'Jube'
8 JUL 2024 · Carlos describes his ride to the Royal Jubilee Hospital on July 8th, detailing his struggle with a swollen foot that prevented him from wearing his running shoes. He mentions the doctor's initial assessment of gout and the subsequent X-ray to rule out a stress fracture. Carlos plans to manage the pain with ibuprofen and reflects on the need to take care of his body to continue being active. He ends his ride by showing scenic views and discussing his intention to edit the recorded audio for better clarity on the doctor's advice.
Downtown Adventure Ride
4 JUL 2024 · Today is Thursday, and I'm off on another adventure. My first stop is the rec center, where I'll do some indoor biking and then wade in the cold, shallow pool. It's a nice sunny day, and I plan to be done by about 11:00. After an hour at the rec center and a 30-minute bike ride downtown, I need to visit a Chinese shop for some special ingredients. I've been having some issues with my Achilles heel, but I'm hoping a few days without much running will help.
Merriman Trail
30 JUN 2024 · I ran the Merriman Trail on PKOLS (Mount Douglas) with my wife, Norma. This moderate trail took us through forested areas with diverse flora and fauna. We enjoyed scenic views of the ocean, Mount Douglas, and Victoria. Accessible year-round, the well-marked trail was perfect for a good workout without being overly strenuous. We found it a convenient and enjoyable trail run

Irvine to the Summit
23 JUN 2024 · My recovery trail run covered a distance of 7.20 km with an elevation gain of 232 meters, taking a total time of 1 hour and 7 minutes. The route started at Irvine and wound through lush, green forested areas, as evident from the trail map. Along the way, Carlos maintained an average cadence of 58 steps per minute. The run took me to the summit, rewarding me with a great view and the sight of a hollow, moss-covered tree trunk, indicating the natural beauty of the trail. This run was a moderate effort on challenging terrain, suitable for both physical recovery and mental rejuvenation.

From Elford St. to Work
16 JUN 2024 · I ran to work today from the top of Johnston Street after getting off the 28 bus. I needed to be there by 7:30 to get the dish-pit up and running for a busy day at my part-time job. The early morning was cool and quiet, a nice contrast to the hectic day I knew was ahead. Once I arrived, I jumped right into getting everything set up, from preparing the sinks and organizing the cleaning supplies to ensuring all the dishes from the previous day were spotless and ready to use.The first few hours flew by as I scrubbed, rinsed, and stacked dishes, pots, and pans, making sure everything was ready for the incoming rush. I worked hard, focusing on maintaining a fast pace while still being thorough. By mid-morning, the kitchen was buzzing with activity, and I was glad to see my preparation paying off as the workflow remained smooth despite the increasing volume of work. Finally, after several intense hours of non-stop work, I finished my tasks by noon. I felt a sense of accomplishment as I looked around the now-clean and orderly dish-pit, ready for the next shift to take over.
