Drew McIntyre was so close and, again, still so far, thanks to CM Punk. When McIntyre won the men’s ladder match at Money in the Bank in Toronto, grabbing the briefcase to execute the first part of his plan, things were going smoothly for the Scottish warrior — who promised to cash in said briefcase that same evening to try and regain the WWE Heavyweight Championship.

And so he did exactly that, but that’s when the second part of his plan went careening off of the rails and into the village below. The end result was the MITB briefcase being made moot and Priest retaining the title, leading to McIntyre going ballistic after the event.

So much so that he assaulted RAW general manager Adam Pearce with a vicious elbow before announcer, and former WWE superstar, Wade Barrett confronted him and escorted him away from the scene.

The last time Punk cost drew the title, in Glasgow, Scotland at Clash at the Castle, it led to McIntyre claiming "I quit" and "screw this company", before launching the sneak attack in Chicago.

Punk reappeared on Saturday after weeks of silence following his bloody hospitalization at the hands of McIntyre, brutally beating him with a steel chair and even the championship belt itself, dealing the final blow it to McIntyre’s face, in a move that also reignited the feud between Punk and a livid Seth Rollins.

This also continues Punk’s promise of never allowing McIntyre to regain gold, ever.

At this point, all signs point to a looming brawl between Punk (assuming he is medically cleared) and McIntyre that could also involve Rollins, who has long wanted to get his hands on Punk following the infamous return at Survivor Series in 2023.

That is assuming Pearce doesn’t toss McIntyre in the gulag by way of a hefty suspension.
