Liverpool star Darwin Nunez is looking to lead Uruguay's attack all the way to glory at the 2024 Copa America this summer.

Nunez missed the 2021 tournament due to a knee injury suffered during his time at Benfica, but he is now making up for lost time after also failing to score at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

A superb 2021/22 season with Benfica persuaded former Reds boss Jurgen Klopp to bring him to Anfield, just a few weeks after Erling Haaland arrived at Manchester City.

Despite earning praise and criticism in equal measure for his first two campaigns on Merseyside, the arrival of Arne Slot could trigger a fresh start next season, on the back of a busy international summer.

Who does Darwin Nunez play for?

Liverpool completed a move to bring Nunez to the Premier League from Benfica ahead of the 2022/23 season, with two seasons now completed at Anfield.

Darwin Nunez career history, stats

Nunez started his career at Uruguayan side Penarol, after emerging through their youth system. He joined Spanish second-tier side Almeria in 2019.

That proved to be his breakthrough in Europe, with 16 goals scored in his sole season in Andalucia, as Almeria narrowly missed out on LaLiga promotion.

Two seasons at Benfica, in 2020/21 an 2021/22, yielded 48 goals in all competitions, including 34 in his second year in Portugal — and that was enough to earn him his move to Liverpool.

After two campaigns at Anfield, Nunez's stats currently sit at 20 Premier League goals, with 33 in all competitions. However, luck has not always been on his side, with nine shots hitting the woodwork last season to set a new Premier League record.

Darwin Nunez transfer fee, contract

Despite only just turning 25 this summer, Nunez has already amassed a significant amount in transfer fees, across three switches

The deal to take him from Penarol to Almeria cost around 4.8m euros (£3.8m / $4.5m) before Benfica paid a club-record fee of 24m euros (£20m / $26m) to sign him in 2020.

With his stock quickly on the rise, Benfica made a huge profit in their sale to Liverpool, with Klopp sanctioning a £63m deal ($80.6m) to secure his arrival.

His current deal at Liverpool runs until 2028.

Darwin Nunez goal record Liverpool and Uruguay

Nunez's 33 goals in all competitions in two seasons at Liverpool does not grab too many headlines but he also registered 13 assists in 2023/24, bettered only by Mohamed Salah on 14.

However, his international goal record is more eye-catching, with 13 in 26 caps — a rate of one goal per two games for Uruguay. However, he has a long way to go to challenge Uruguay's all-time top scorer, with former Liverpool forward Luis Suarez the top hotshot for his country on 68.

Darwin Nunez tattoos

Alongside his goal scoring exploits for both Liverpool and Uruguay, Nunez is as recognisable on the pitch for his distinctive tattoos, which have a special meaning to the striker.

Amongst his extensive array of body art, Nunez has "Family" embroidered on his chest, with a huge lion on his back and a smaller one on his forearm.

The most personal tattoo addition is on his right arm, which was first spotted during a goal celebration for Liverpool back in 2022, with an image of his youngest baby son.
