Canada vs. Venezuela final score, result: CanMNT advances to Copa America semifinals after beating Vinotinto on penalty kicks

Who saw this coming? 

Canada, which didn't have a full time coach until just before Copa America and were in a group with Argentina, Chile, and Peru, have earned a place in the 2024 Copa America semifinals. The CONCACAF side knocked off Venezuela, 4-3 on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals on Friday evening at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Canada now faces a rematch with Argentina in the semifinals on Tuesday, July 5 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. 

Canada goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau made two huge saves in the shootout, and captain Alphonso Davies kept Canada alive with a terrific goal into the upper 90 in the fifth round of penalty kicks, giving substitute Ismael Kone the opportunity to score the game-winning spot kick. 

The match ended at 1-1 after 90 minutes in what should be remembered as an instant classic in this tournament. It was an end-to-end encounter from start to finish, and it was Canada's speed up front and along the wings that caused Venezuela huge problems and led to the first goal. 

Moments after Venezuela saved a shot from Jonathan David off the goalline, David found space down the right wing and crossed into the middle, where Jacob Shaffelburg ghosted in and his quick shot beat Venezuela goalkeeper Rafael Romo at his near post to put Canada up 1-0. 

Canada had numerous other chances on the counter-attack, but their final pass and shot let them down multiple times. It allowed Venezuela back into the game, and the veteran striker Salomon Rondon made no mistake. After Aramburu cleared the ball up field following a long-throw-in by Canada, Rondon created space for himself from Canada defender Moise Bombito, and he saw Crepeau off his line. Rondon then chipped Crepeau from 40-yards out to tie the score. 

Crepeau and Romo continued to play huge roles in the second half, as well as both team's exhausted defenders who had to race back constantly to make goal-saving blocks and tackles. In the end, neither team could find a winner in regular time, and the game went straight to penalty kicks to determine a winner.

12th penalty: Ismael Kone. GOAL! A slow-walk-up for Kone, stutter steps, and Romo starts leaning to his left, and Kone excellently and calmly puts it to the opposite side. Canada advances to the Copa America Semifinals!! Jesse Marsch is loving it, celebrating with every one of his players. 

Meanwhile, Venezuela players and fans are in tears. They were outstanding tonight and had a terrific tournament. They truly seem on the verge of making their first World Cup in two years. 

11th penalty: Wilker Angel. SAVE CREPEAU! He put it at the perfect height and Crepeau dove the right way and made an easy save. Terrible moment for Angel. 

10th penalty: Alphonso Davies. GOLAZO! He finds the upper 90 in the top right corner and Romo dives the wrong way. Outstanding goal. 

9th penalty: Jhonder Cadiz. Goal! A short run-up with stutter steps and he waits until Crepeau moves and sends it the other way. All the pressure on Canada now. 

8th penalty: Stephen Eustaquio. SAVE ROMO! Eustaquio tries to put it mostly down the middle and Romo reads it all the way, diving slightly to his left making a huge save. 

7th penalty: Jefferson Savarino. SAVE CREPEAU! He dove to his right and got a hand, maybe a finger to Savarino's shot. An outstanding save from the Portland Timbers goalkeeper against his former MLS opponent. 

6th penalty: Moise Bombito. Goal! Excellent run-up and stutter step, and Bombito just waits for Romo to move and sends it the other way. 

5th penalty: Tomas Rincon. Goal! He blasted it as hard as he could down the middle, and Crepeau dove too far and couldn't adjust to save it. 

4th penalty: Liam Millar. Miss! The substitute for Canada fires it over the goal. We're still level at 1-1. 

3rd penalty: Yangel Herrera. Miss! He missed the goal entirely, shooting it wide to the left. Huge miss for the former New York City FC player. Looks like it just touched the outside of the post. 

2nd penalty: Jonathan David. Scores! Romo dove the right way but David hit it hard enough that Romo couldn't catch up to it. 

1st penalty: Venezuela elects to go first. It's Rondon...he sends Crepeau the wrong way and scores calmly into the right side of the net. 

End of Regulation: Canada 1, Venezuela 1. One of the most enjoyable games of the tournament ends in a draw after 90 minutes. Canada took an early lead through Shaffelburg and threatened many times but were left to rue their missed chances. Midway through the second half, Rondon scored his second goal of Copa America in style, chipping Crepeau from 40-yards out to tie the game. Neither team could find a winner late as substitutions and tired legs slowed the pace of the match. 

90th+5 min: Eustaquio delivers the free kick in but it's cleared away at the near post by Herrera and Sampaio blows for full time. We are heading to penalty kicks. 

90th+4 min: Free kick Canada and yellow to Aramburu. He finally put a foot wrong and paid for it with a yellow card. Huge moment for Canada to win this in regulation. 

90th+1 min: Martinez and Osorio off, and Wilker Angel as well as Venezuela captain Tomas Rincon are on. Remember, the game goes to penalty kicks if the score is tied after 90 minutes. 

Just moments before, Venezuela won the ball in the middle of the field and sprayed it out wide to Lacava, but Johnston blocks his cross. 

90th min: Four minutes of second half stoppage time. Can anyone find a winner!? 

89th min: A couple of late changes for Venezuela. Jefferson Savarino comes on for Soteldo, and Matias Lacava comes on for Bello. 

86th min: SAVE Romo! Meanwhile, Ismail Kone comes on for Jonathan Osorio. 

85th min: SAVE Crepeau on Rondon. Turns out Rondon was offside but it's another great chance for mushroom. 

83rd min: Venezuela attacks on a break, Soteldo finds himself down the right side and crosses into the far post. Navarro arrives late and tries to power a strike but he misses badly. 

81st min: Oluwaseyi over the bar! the Minnesota United striker took a chipped cross into the box but it sits up too high and Oluwaseyi isn't able to keep it on frame. 

80th min: It feels like either team can score the second goal. Oluwaseyi gets the ball in the attacking third and tries to feed Ahmed but it's deflected out of play for a throw-in. 

77th min: Oluwaseyi close! The substitute takes a touch forward and then fires with his left foot and it just misses the top corner. Cornelius is meanwhile back in action on the field. 

73rd min: Two more changes for Canada. Larin and Laryea come off after giving a massive shift and are replaced by Tani Oluwaseyi and Ali Ahmed.

Meanwhile, there's an extended delay as Cornelius went up for a header and seemed to take an elbow to the face from Cadiz when he went to challenge the aerial duel. 

70th min: Cadiz fires a strike towards goal but it was well wide of the mark. 

68th min: It's end-to-end here! Bello leads the break for Venezuela, and sets up a great opportunity for Rondon but it's cleared at the last moment. 

67th min: Millar again! Just wide from the Canadian after beating the offside trap and dribbling into the box, only for a late defensive tackle from Osorio to save the day for Venezuela. 

66th min: Save Romo! Johnston sends an early cross into the middle. It takes a couple of deflections and ends up with Millar, but his shot is right at Romo and saved. 

64th min: GOAL VENEZUELA! It's spectacular from Solomon Rondon and it comes off a long throw-in from Canada where they fell asleep defensively. The ball is cleared up the field. Rondon pushes Bombito out of the way, notices Crepeau is way off his line, and chips the Canadian goalkeeper. Let's see how both teams handle the next five minutes. 1-1. 

63rd min: First change for Canada, as Liam Millar comes on for Shaffelburg. 

62nd min: Chance for Canada but it comes to nothing. Laryea makes a great interception on Ferraresi and goes off on the break from the halfway line, but he overruns the ball in the box and it's eventually cleared away. 

59th min: Venezuela makes its first change and it's an attacking one. Jhonder Cadiz, a striker, comes on for the midfielder, Casseres. 

58th min: Save Crepeau! Bello tries the stunning volley chip over Crepeau from a tight angle and at full stretch, Crepeau tips it over for a corner kick. 

57th min: Long pass in the air to Larin and Ferraresi gets a last-moment touch to get it back to Romo and clear the danger. 

54th min: MARTINEZ OVER! Just at the other end of the field, Venezuela does well to control the ball and Soteldo crosses into the middle. Two poor clearances from Canada means the ball falls to the Martinez in the box, but he lashes at his strike and it goes over the bar.  

53rd min: LARIN WIDE! What a chance for Canada, great ball from Bombito down the line to Laryea, then Laryea cuts it back and Larin has all the time in the world to shoot, but he puts it high and wide. That may be a miss that Canada wishes it had back depending on the final score. 

50th min: Soteldo dances down the right wing and cuts between Davies and Cornelius and takes a kick from Cornelius and goes straight down. Cornelius is shown a yellow card. 

49th min: Ferraresi is down grabbing his back after going up for a header over Larin and being undercut by David, and falling down from more than 6 feet up right on his back. He limps off the field but is able to return. 

47th min: Early corner kick for Venezuela but it's caught by Crepeau with ease. 

2nd Half Kickoff: We're back underway from AT&T Stadium. No changes for either side at the break. 

Halftime: Canada 1, Venezuela 0. This has been one of the games of the tournament, just in terms of end-to-end action. Canada's incredible speed in their front three has them looking to exploit Venezuela's high line constantly, especially after set pieces. It worked in the opening goal and Canada was close to adding a second. Canada finished the half with an xG of 1.02, while Venezuela is at only 0.58. Venezuela needs to find another attacking outlet because while Soteldo has been dangerous, his final pass and shot hasn't been precise enough tonight. 

45th+3 min: Shot by Soteldo off a turnover in Canada's defensive area but the shot takes a heavy deflection and it's an easy save for Crepeau. 

45th+1 min: Another great tackle from Aramburu on Shaffelburg. These two have been a terrific matchup all evening, and Aramburu has gotten the best of Shaffelburg most of the night, except on Shaffelburg's goal. 

45th min: Four minutes of first half stoppage time. 

44th min: Laryea and Rondon get face to face and have to be separated by Sampaio. He's so far managed to keep the game moving but it feels on a knife's edge. 

Free kick to Venezuela. 

41st min: Players are just throwing their bodies at everything. The intensity can be felt through the screen. Rondon had a great glancing header pass that Bombito just got to in time to keep Bello away from taking a shot. 

39th min: Lots of fouls have been called in the last few minutes as both sides go strong into tackles. Venezuela keeps pushing for an equalizer but the final pass has been lacking so far today. 

34th min: Shaffelburg down injured after a strong tackle from Martinez that saw Shaffelburg's foot get stuck in the ground and possible lead to a knee injury....he's now walking off the field under his own power, a good sign. That looked like it could have been a bad injury. 

Meanwhile, just before the referee stops play to check on him, Soteldo nutmegs Johnston and earns a free kick on the left side of the field. 

31st min: JUST WIDE CANADA! Great passing around the box after David wins the ball back from Ferraresi and the ball finds Shaffelburg, who delivers a great cross. It's deflected out to Laryea who fires an outside of the boot strike that just barely misses the extended foot of David as well as the goal. What a chance to go up 2-0. 

29th min: It's a free kick to Venezuela and Canada fails to clear on a pair of occasions, leading to Venezuela winning the ball back high up the field and looking dangerous. Herrera takes a strike that misses badly, giving Canada the ball back and a chance to push up. 

26th min: SAVE ROMO AGAIN! Off a corner kick for Venezuela where Crepeau had to punch it away and didn't get all on it, Davies picks up the clearance from Bombito, dribbles around a couple of Venezuela players and finds Shaffelburg in acres of space. Shaffelburg plays into the middle to David but his first touch lets him down and Romo is off his line to make the save. What a sequence at both ends of the field!

24th min: SAVE ROMO! Outstanding work by Larin down the right wing to feed David, who cuts it back into the box and leads to Shaffelburg putting another shot low and to Romo's left. This time Romo read it the whole way and saved it for a corner. 

23rd min: Back to back technical errors from Soteldo on important plays, first a cross from the left as the ball bounces a bit and ends up with Soteldo air-mailing his cross over every teammate. Then a minute later, Soteldo has time and space outside the box in the center and goes to take a shot and misses badly. 

20th min: Chance for Venezuela! A terrific build-up, with former Red Bulls midfielder Christian Casseres Jr. playing a big role spraying the ball left and right. It ends up with Aramburu down the right, he beats Davies around the outside and delivers a great cross that is put behind by Johnston. 

16th min: Header wide! Soteldo steals a poor clearance from Moise Bombito and he crosses into the center. With Bombito way out of position, Rondon finds himself in space and fires a header towards goal, but it goes wide. Huge chance to tie the score. 

15th min: Another chance from Canada, but Larin lets the ball run through his legs in the attacking third and it's cleared away. Venezuela's defense can't seem to deal with the speed of Canada up front. 

13th min: GOAL CANADA! What a start for Canada! Jonathan David finds space down the right wing and Shaffelburg cuts inside from the left and fires a quick strike past Romo at the near post to put Canada up, 1-0. He runs over to the Canada bench to hold up a poster of Tajon Buchanan's jersey to the crowd, dedicating the goal to him. 

12th min: SAVED OFF THE LINE! What a chance for Canada. Jonathan David plays a terrific pass into space to Cyle Larin and he only has Romo to beat, but Romo is way off his line and out of the box. Larin tries to touch it around Romo but he deflects it away. It goes back to David, who tries a chip but it's cleared off the line by Osorio. 

11th min: Johnston gets a talking to from Sampaio after he absolutely cleans out Martinez after winning the ball first. 

9th min: Strong work from Canada's front three to start the press and force Venezuela farther back. Venezuela can't hurt Canada much if it's back in its own defensive third. 

7th min: Tough fouls on both sides already. Yeferson Soteldo went in late to a challenge with Alastair Johnston and fouled the Celtic right back. Then Stephen Eustaquio fouls Yangel Herrera in the middle of the park while Venezula was looking to counter. 

5th min: Shaffelburg takes on Aramburu and beats him for pace, Aramburu pulls him down by the shirt but the referee waves play on. I think Venezuela got away with one there. No VAR review. 

3rd min: Save Crepeau! Rondon was offside but before the flag goes up, he is played into space by Herrera and unleashes a powerful strike that Crepeau gets a hand to at full stretch. Excellent early chance for Venezuela.

Canada: Marsch has found a backline he trusts and starts the same group again. Veteran midfielder Jonathan Osorio starts for the second-straight match as well, and Richie Laryea keeps his spot at right midfield after the Buchanan injury knocked out his main competition for the position. 

Venezuela: It's a third-straight start for Eduard Bello, who came off the bench to score in Venezuela's opening win over Ecuador before scoring against Jamaica in the group game finale. Batista has also stuck with the same backline in consecutive games, especially after pitching a pair of shutouts.

1 hour before kickoff: Venezuela has been in great form as of late between World Cup qualifying in South America, friendly matches, and the Copa America since last September. And that great form continues in the U.S. Per Opta, Venezuela has six wins and just two losses in their last 10 games on U.S. soil. 1 hour, 5 mins before kickoff: The intense heat in the United States the last month has been a storyline for this tournament and it's one that FIFA will have to address when the World Cup begins in 2026. But that won't be an issue tonight. AT&T Stadium in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs is an indoor stadium, so it will be climate controlled and a much better environment to play in. 

1 hour, 20 mins before kickoff: The bookies have Venezuela as a slight favorite, but both Venezuela and Canada are in positive odds for the match, showing how close this matchup is. Venezuela scored six goals in the group stage while Canada only allowed two goals, including two clean sheets. So it's an electric offense against one of the tightest defenses at Copa America. 

1 hour, 40 mins before kickoff: Other than the terrific story of these two teams making the quarterfinal stage, the main storyline is the injury loss of Canada right wing back Tajon Buchanan. The 25-year-old suffered a broken leg in training earlier this week and while he didn't start the last two games, he was a key player for Canada off the bench, providing speed, attacking ability, and experience. Without Buchanan available, we could see coach Jesse Marsch going with 18-year-old English-Canadian Luc de Fougerolles off the bench.

Canada faces a significant setback with Tajon Buchanan unavailable due to a broken tibia, which required surgery. Ismael Kone, who recently signed with Ligue 1 side Marseille, is likely to return to the lineup after sitting out the final group match.

Jonathan David, who scored Canada's only goal in the group stage, continues to be a crucial player for the Canucks. Goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau will look to maintain his impressive form, having posted consecutive clean sheets.

Venezuela will be without Darwin Machis, who received a second booking on matchday three. Nahuel Ferraresi and Miguel Navarro should return to the starting lineup after being kept off the field against Jamaica to avoid further yellow cards.
