Artem Harutyunyan looks to defy the literal and figurative odds, as well as doubters, when he challenges Shakur Stevenson in New Jersey for the WBC lightweight title.

Stevenson is a three-division champion, holding featherweight, super featherweight, and lightweight gold. The 2016 Olympic silver medalist beat Edwin De Los Santos for the vacant WBC lightweight title. He competes on a fight card in the Prudential Center for the fourth time in his career.

Many have questioned Stevenson facing Harutyunyan, ranked seventh in the WBC’s rankings. It comes after the German's last fight, a loss against now-former title contender Frank Martin. Martin recently lost against Gervonta Davis, a fight that could have went to Artem.

However, his previous run saw Harutyunyan dominate the competition in his home country, making him a worthy opponent.

“When you go down the rankings and you see who’s actually available to fight, it doesn’t leave you with a lot. Knowing Artem’s amateur background, his fight with Frank Martin, he’s been in the running for a while,” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti via Boxing Scene.
